Proof-of-concept: moving Smalltalk code editing support into SmalltalkEditor

Hi all, I went on a journey this morning which could have been quixotic, but I believe I actually found and slayed a small windmill. I was a bit annoyed by how autoEnclose (and by extension autoIndent) were in effect for even the most basic of TextMorphs, e.g. those dragged out of the Supplies flap. I was also kind of disappointed that turning on/off the auto-enclose preference affected all text morphs, even those not specifically designated for Smalltalk code editing. I was emboldened when I saw the class comment for TextEditor: "[I] have no specific facilities for editing Smalltalk code. Those are found in SmalltalkEditor." I found myself able to address this by making a few changes: * moving autoEnclose and autoIndent functionality out of TextEditor and into SmalltalkEditor * changing the default editor class for TextMorph to TextEditor * specifying that the #editorClass for TextMorphForEditView should be a SmalltalkEditor * changing PreferenceWizard to recognize these preferences have a new home I'm attaching a changeset to this email and not uploading an .mcz to inbox (sorry). This is because I don't know how to represent changes across many projects in Monticello, and I sort of consider this a proof-of-concept rather than something I think warrants immediate inclusion in the image. Please do let me know what you think about this idea. I also fear my implementation of SmalltalkEditor>>#dispatchOnKeyboardEvent: might be lacking. Thanks, Tim ps - I think a next step of moving Smalltalk editing support into SmalltalkEditor might be to move the call to ToolSet>>#codeCompletionAround:textMorph:keyStroke: out of TextMorph>>#keyStroke: and into its subclass, in TextMorphForEditView>>#keyStroke:. I didn't complete that move and did not quite figure out how the subclass version of that method works.

Just a thanks for the work so far

I just gave the latest beta 5.2 a look last night and I'm rather psyched about work that's been done. I personally am not a 'coder', I don't like 'writing' code, etc. and so I've been mostly using the Etoys distribution as it allows me to get straight into the visual and motion design work that I'm actually interested in. I had heard that Etoys was going to be merged back into squeak, making the eye halo actually feel logical to even be included again and when I tried version 5.0 a while back, it was still largely under construction/on the to-do list. However last night, other than the Etoys scriptor needing to be in text rather than tile, I was very very happy and impressed at the same time and I just wanted to thank everyone who's work and contributions towards this goal has gotten it to this point now. Even if for some extremely unlikely reason that Squeak dev completely stopped tomorrow morning, what is there is already nice. Really, everyone has outdone themselves on squeak 5.x and this is just me saying thanks and letting you know at least one person out in the wilderness appreciates it. I apologize for cluttering up the mailing list with kudos and congrats, but I was really yelling at my screen last night saying the explicit versions of 'hooray' and thought afterwards, 'I should write a polite and publicly acceptable version of how I feel and pass that to those responsible' so here I am. Again, thanks and stellar work. Peace

[Documentation] How do I use the PackageInfo class?

Hello Chris In the documentation thread you wrote that the PackageInfo mechanism is not used properly. I assume because people do not know how to do it and that >t is not promoted enough The wiki has a description of PackageInfo http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/3329 It says what a package is (= a collection of classes plus methods in categories marked with *theNameOfthePackage). 5.2a (18179) Test Results on Windows - 32bit and 64bit

Hi again. After the discussion a while back about 64 bit being slower than 32, I ran the full test suite for the latst 5.2a release against both on Windows. 32bit - 22:52.193 64bit - 25:07.789 Yep, looks like the truth. The results - same number of failures (21) and expected failures (29) on both. 32bit had 2 errors - WebClientServerTest>>#testGetFields (Test timed out) - AllocationTest>>#testOutOfMemorySignal 64bit has 2 errors: - WebClientServerTest>>#testServerDestroy (twice) (Test timed out) No idea why it had it twice - weird. Both also had 1 unexpected passes as well. How do you find these in the TestRunner? Hmm. The timeouts - before writing this email, I tried it a few times and continued to get timeouts. Then, looked away, fiddled, and they ran. After clicking on one of them about 30 times, I got the timeout error again, then once again they are clearly sub-second. Very annoying heisen bugs. The 32bit outOfMemorySignal is failing at allocationTest>>vmParameterAt:put:, where it is getting called to set parm 67 to 1712567184 (instead of 0, which it was previously). I'm not sure how to debug this - anything else that would help? Thanks, cbc

Indirectly I hope to help debug this. I am nearly finished with an error handling facility in the VM for FFI calls that will fail an FFI callout primitive with an error code indicating the kind of exception and the pc. This should at least stop the system from crashing and give us an improved ability to make sense of the exception; at least we'll be able to examine the arguments to the call. More details as I roll out the facility. It will require integrating some support code, rewriting FFI callout signatures to include an error code, etc. p.s.
