Printing and the Squeak Swiki

When trying to print from Squeak, I use the "send contents to printer" menu command. When it prints, it prints upside down and backwards...!!! Weird. I've printed from Squeak at work, and it was fine. Fro more information, I'm using WinXP Pro, printing to an HP Photosmart 1215 printer at home. At work, it's all networked LaserJets and Lexmarks, and they all seem to work well. As for the Squeak SWiki, are we being hacked? I've been monitoring the recent changes, and quite a few pages (Squeak, Freshmeat, Pictures) have been changed by merely appending pictures, many of which really have nothing to do with the purpose of the SWiki. Are people trying to steal bandwidth and/or storage? Am I late to this discussion? (I just subscribed two days ago) Brief self-introduction: My name is David Brown, I've been Smalltalking off and on since 1985 when someone handed me the Blue book. My last paying Smalltalk gig was at Expeditors International. I believe I met John McIntosh at a conference a while back, I remember coveting his t-shirt of the famous Byte cover. VMMaker special change sets?

Hi - I have a question about VMMaker. I'm using vm Squeak 3.2.7Beta6 Carbon and an image at change set 4889. The source tree from SourceForge contains a directory 'squeak/platforms/MacOS/vm/specialChangeSets". Is it standard procedure to file those change sets in before using VMMaker to generate source? Those change sets are: CGeneratorEnhancements-ajh.cs Globalstructure-JMM.1.cs MoreInterpAccessors-JMM.2.cs These were mentioned in previous posts, but I didn't see them in the current instructions in the VMMaker and VMMakerTool class comments. I was wondering if those special-change-sets had been absorbed into the image, or if they were a branch that one always takes when preparing to generate code? (For instance, it seems like some of that code overlaps with the change sets 4865-7 (VMMaker32-7part1-3).) When I hit the 'Generate All' button after filing in the code in the specialChangeSets directory I get an error - an instance of MacOSPowerPCOS9VMMaker tries to call the method #addExports: which doesn't seem to be there. I figure I probably have filed in either in either too little or too much. Does anyone know which change set contains #addExports (or removes the need for it)? (VMMaker(Tool) certainly makes building a homemade vm a more inviting activity than it used to be!) Thanks very much for any pointers, Jay Hardesty jayh(a)panix.com

String>withBlanksTrimmed is commented as removing leading and trailig blanks. Actually it removes _separator_ chars, not just blanks. We have #withBlanksCondensed (bolot) Comment says 'leading/trailing blanks removed and consecutive white spaces condensed', which would be an odd combination (internal TABs would be converted to spaces, but leading and trailing TABs would be kept). Makes two copies when only one is needed. (OK, that's technically three copies, only two needed...) #withBlanksTrimmed (jm) Comment says 'leading and trailing blanks [are] trimmed' but as Tim Rowledge notes, deals with separators. Personally I read 'blanks' as meaning just spaces, so I claim it ought to be at least recommented and probably renamed. A method to remove only blanks may be useful? #withSeparatorsCompacted (ls) Comment says 'replace each sequences [sic] of whitespace by a single space character'. Keeps leading and trailing layout as single spaces: ' x y ' withSeparatorsCompacted => ' x y ' So are (TAB, LF, CR, space) 'whitespace', 'blanks', or 'separators'? Since the predicate used is #isSeparator, ...

A naive question

[BUG] String>asNumber fails unless first char is legit digit

Try '' asNumber It correctly returns 0. Now try ' ' asNumber boom! Despite the comment in Integer class>readForom:base: claiming that 0 will be returned if no digit is found. Likewise ' 3.1' fails. I'd say that somewhere in the sequence of messages the debugger will show you should be removing/skipping leading non-digits. It looks a little extra complicated since I imagine leading non-digits in a radix'd number would be improper (ie '16r 23' may well be improper, depending on definitions I don't know the details of). Making filed-in classes indexable

I just filed in the OSProcess stuff. But now I get a 'classes are not indexable' error when I issue... Smalltalk allMethodsWithSourceString:matchCase: How do I make these classes indexable? Daniel Klein
