Hi, The last days I was thinking in some problems we have. The problems that are walking in in my head are basically 2: - The imposibility to find a good way to evolve the monolitic image to a modular one. - The problems I found trying to get absolute transparency in rST. What I means is: The problems to evolve a monolitic image to a distributed one. Thinking in a solution to these problems I remembered an Alan's phrase: "Extreme Late Binding". Since Smalltalk/80 we didn't find the way to add more late binding to Smalltalk. For example, today we have (most of the times) hard-coupling to Classes (using the globals). Also we have hard-coupling to some "especial" objects as nil, true, false, SmallIntegers, etc. The other source of hard-coupling is the extensive use of identity. When you use identity is not so easy to change the object (examples: #isNil, #ifTrue:, #==, etc). Yes I known what you think: realize of a problem is the easy part, to find a solution is a *really* different history. I have not the answer, only some vague ideas... What we need, IMHO, is some mechanism to refer to objects based not on names (variables, literals) but based on some characteristics of our target Object. SelectionMorph had a hard-coded reference to its class, which makes it hard to subclass. "!

[Q] On changeset fileOut: methodNotUnderstood: isSeparator

Hi, Well, my friend and I are working on this banking application. He develops the front end with comanche. When he wants to file out his project's changeset, there is a halt with "MessageNotUnderstood: isSeparator". The trace back is topped with UndefinedObject(Object)>>doesNotUnderstand. We're working 3.0 here. When opening the debug window, there is no code shown in the "middle" window, except for ERROR "MessageNotUnderstood: isSeparator" What is happening here? The Voodoo of Inlined Methods

(I am new to Squeak, as you may guess anyway; using CocoaSqueak 3.2 with the Squeak 3.0 final image). The comment describing Number>>to:do: states that this method cannot be overridden due to inlining. I construed this to refer to method definitions on subclasses. However, the FAQ ``Message Sends Inlined by the Compiler'' seems to imply that Squeak decides whether to compile a message-send inline or not without regard to the class of the receiver, and indeed, a selector lookup would be much easier to implement than a class-inference algorithm. This would explain my wondrous experiences when I tried to define and use Point>>to:do: (*), although Point isn't a subclass of Number, the only (other) implementor of a #to:do: method. My question: What's right? rthappe (*) By the way, the intended ``upLeft to: bottomRight do: aBlock'' iterates over the obvious rectangular grid consisting of all points p: upLeft <= p <= bottomRight (with step 1 in each component and <= in the sense defined by Point). For the time being, I've resigned myself to using another selector.

[BUG]Debuggers don't respect shift-click

AFAICT the correct behavior for any bowsing tool on shift-click is to show the decompiled code of the method. Debuuger winwdows don't seem to do this. This can be very annoying in debugging ;-) To reproduce: in a workspace do: self halt. Choose debugIt form the pre-debug window shift-click on the line with Object>>halt. You will see the method with it's comment which can't possibly be reconstructed from the compiled code, can it? Squeak on, Torge

The number of Squeak *users* could easily exceed the number of downloads or the number of subscribers to the list. For example, each year for the last three years I've had 4-12 students using Squeak in a 4th-year OO paper. (Sadly, this is the last time.) I downloaded Squeak; now that it's here they get it from our copy. In the 3rd-year comparative programming languages paper, 30-45 students toy briefly with Squeak to see what a real OO language looks like. They don't download their own copies either. Unfortunately, the person who teaches that part of the paper is even more of a beginner with Squeak than I am. (Just as the one member of the department who has written a book about Prolog wasn't even invited to be involved with the teaching of the Prolog part... I have never been a friend of comparative programming languages papers; 3 weeks to meet a new paradigm and a new language is derisory.) The 4th-year students who used Squeak found it hard to get started. (The Guzdial books are fine, but it seems that LaLonde is still the best book for getting started in the Squeak environment...) Once they got past that, however, they came to feel an affection for Squeak that they hadn't felt for Java.

[BUG]SystemBrowser 'inheritance' button doesn't do what the bubble help says

... bubble help claims that the 'inheritence' button changes color and shows assorted hierarchy information, but actually pressing said button opens a method hierarchy browser.
