David. I'm not sure this does what I want. I think it only deals with unnamed OS pipes and not named pipes. However, I think I can treat names pipes just like they were files except I need to do an fcntl or equiv to ensure non-blocking reads. Have you, or anybody else done this before? problem loading Kernel-CdG.45 in 6695

Hi I started to integrate the changes of Cees for ToolPlus. Now I have the following problem - take a 6695 - open the squeakfoundation/inbox - merge Kernel-CdG.45.mcz The system gets blocked on reloading.... I do not know what reloading is but I can't do anything. Cees did you try to load your changes in an image? Did you get the same problem? Stef

News Team Proposal

Hi, This is a proposal for the creation of a new team, the News Team. It is also a call for participation in the same team. The purpose of this team is to publish news regarding Squeak development and use. It aims to provide a service to the Squeak community, highlighting anything which the Squeak users may find interesting. It will also try to promote Squeak outside its own community, by submitting articles and news items to mainstream websites such as Slashdot and OSNews. The first task of this team will be publishing The Weekly Squeak. Ideally this news-zine will come to include all the Squeak-related mailing lists, blogs etc. The SqueakViews column will remain under the Weekly Squeak banner, at least initially. So, if you are either a newcomer or experienced user, and you're interested in joining this team, please speak up and let us know you're available to help! Thanks, Giovanni

ComSwiki 'winterlong' - is rendering broken?

Hi, I'm trying to render a Swiki we're using for creating documentation, but no files are created and the browser stays in "loading...", all the while Squeak is eating minor amounts of CPU time. Is this a known issue? Any work-arounds? TIA, Cees

Having dug a bit deeper this is the architecture I am considering. When starting out on a new system in unfamiliar territory one never knows how stable things are going to be, what gotchas there are around the corner and whether when you ramp up from test data to real data volumes things will fall apart. I would therefore really appreciate hearing from anyone that has a similar architecture running, or even one part of it. Here it is then: Browser >> Tier1 (Seaside and all app logic) >(via OperaORB-native)> Tier2 (Server Wrappers to named pipes) >(pipes)> ['C' Server Processes] To date all I have done is the Seaside tutorial, got a test message from Tier1 (XP) to Tier2 (Linux) using OperaORB and run up some processes using OSProcess. It's not a lot to base an architecture on. I just have a gut feel it will go. I did have one complete lockup while I was playing with OperaORB, caused by user error but does give me a stability concern. Thanks in advance for any responses. Thanks to everyone that responded. It appears that although Squeak is moving in a direction of more conventional development tools it's still in that transitional phase. In a sense I don't want conventional, but I do want usable. >From the suggestions I can see that things that BobsUI and Tweak offer possibilities (thanks Simon). I will have to investigate further. I can also see that creating small functional morphs and just have them free-range in the project space has advantages for what I am doing (thanks Herbert). One perennial problem with standard builders or even coded layouts is real estate and having only what you need visible. Even using layout managers does not solve this problem unless there is only one resizable window. For a complex display with fixed areas of widgets , graphic areas for graphs etc, a tree view and tabbed panes for all sorts of applets and options it becomes very hard to get a good looking display under all circumstances so just having fragments that work together could be a good move. Alexandre suggests using Seaside. Funny you should say that. I have looked at Seaside before and ran through the latest tutorial a few days ago. I like it a lot and the idea that a web app is easier to develop and more flexible than a desktop app certainly turns conventional thinking on its head. I need to dig deeper into this. Dave makes some suggestions about interfacing which I need to try out. Do I take it that squeak has built in distribution facilities? Of the things that didn't get answered I thing there are two: 1. If I build a morph, say just a bunch of buttons to control one aspect of my interface how do I generate code from that or do I just write code in the first place? 2. How do I get rid of morphs that give continuous 'message not understood' every time I mouse over them? FW: Software Freedom org Cryptography team update

All, The Cryptography Team needed a lawyer for both US Registration, and to help with talks with Cincom. I put out a call for help and someone suggested we contact the softwareFreedom org. I mentioned that we would update the group on the result of that request. I have good news, they have agreed to help. We are putting together a formal relationship this Thursday Nov 3rd 2005.
