My reasoning (taking the assumption that Lint rules have good reasons behind them) went something like this: a message with a name like #add: tells you that it adds something to something else, but it DOES NOT tell you that it happens to return the added object. I reported it back in mid December its assigned to ned (cause he created it.) and he hasn't attended to it yet. The immediate cure is to revert Morph>>position to its original code. Thanks Ned, I have it all working now and will hopefully soon be able to put a simple shape-file viewer on squeakmap. I am still a bit confused on how to work with Canvasses, but apparently it is simpler than I thought it was. (the GraphicsContext in VisualWorks has also been hard to grasp for me...). I don't understand, though, what the distinction between "on the Display" and "on a morph" is. From the graphical point of view, all a Morph does is to draw itself on canvases when asked. So all you need to do is: drawOn: aCanvas aCanvas asBalloonCanvas drawPolygon: ... or something similar. As long as "asBalloonCanvas" returns a BalloonCanvas (which FormCanvas does), you get the same thing whether the Morph is being rendered to the Display, to a form, or is being rendered some other way. However, because some canvases (notablly the ShadowCanvas used to draw drop shadows) don't actually respond to asBalloonCanvas, or return a BalloonCanvas when asked, you have to be a little more careful sometimes: either you stick to the guaranteed Canvas operations, or you test for whether you got a canvas that supports your desired operations. In Connectors (which sometimes draw themselves using Bezier curves) I had to test the resultant canvas and use a different drawing strategy for shadows. -- Ned Konz http://bike-nomad.com/squeak/

This is a maintenance release that improves performance of downloads of individual posts as well as the initial load of the listing into BFAV. It also fixes a number of bugs. In particular, in ensures that posts with the most recent comments always show at the top. My two cents on the "New leadership formed"

I wish the new group success with their efforts: we need someone trying to change things. Recently I have been unable to spend as much time on Squeak as it deserves. But my article on "Rock Solid Images" got zero attention, and the community start talking about get money from squeak to going on on developement. This is a bit bad in my own opinion: because it means we come at the very bottom line. So we need a different approach: I like the goran's humor, but I ask them also a more strong attention to all the quest we face on and... a nick name (like MouseTrappers :) My work is for the community. Net.ObjectDays 2005 Ð Call for Papers Erfurt, Germany, September 19-22 www.netobjectdays.org Net.ObjectDays is one of the major international conferences on object-oriented and Internet-based technologies, concepts, and applications. Based on its strong focus on research and innovation, Net.ObjectDays aims at bringing together leading researchers from academia and system architects, developers, and customers from industry and administration. Recent developments in Information and Communication Technologies have substantially changed the nature of global relationships, sources of competitive advantage, and opportunities for economic and social development. These changes pose increasingly complex challenges to the computer science community in general and the software community in particular. Self-adaptation, self-management, and self-healing are key features in a new software landscape that aims on providing flexible solutions to solve one-of-a-kind problems in an adequate, reliable and cost-effective way. Proposing two important Teams

Hi all! Yesterday we presented the Team model and now we want to follow that up with proposing two quite important Teams. As you have seen Ken Causey has already picked up the ball and is proposing a Team for tackling one of our biggest challenges - Harvesting. Both in the short and long term. Perfect. Now... after chatting on IRC with various people etc we want to propose to form the following two Teams. Packages ---------- This is a very central baby to many of us. The Team would focus on the following issues: - PackageInfo/Package etc. There is new code from Alexandre Bergel etc, we need to get something nailed down and into the 3.9 stream. - TFNR. (Task Force November Revolution, see Swiki) In short - the idea of partitioning the image and assigning maintainers (with responsibility and authority) to all parts (sometimes referred to as Stewards trying to convey that being a maintainer of a base image part is a slightly different role than just being a "maintainer"). This is not primarily about ripping out packages. - SqueakMap. Moving SqueakMap forward, lots of stuff there including dependencies. - Universes. Lex's idea about maintaining coherent "distributions" of packages. (well, he can correct me, but anyway :) ). - ...and various other related things like Monticello and its use in all this etc. The overall theme of this Team is to evolve the technology we already have and to make working solutions for the current and near term Squeak releases. And of course to make it all fit together. Without me knowing if people are interested I can *at least* see the following names in this Team: Doug Way, Lex Spoon, Göran Krampe, Avi Bryant, Alexandre Bergel, Ned Konz I am not going to venture into talking about who should be Team leader here - I have a favorite though and its not me ;). But I am definitely signing up as a very active member. FutureModules ---------------- This is a Team focusing on more "future" technologies in this area. Examples that have come up are: - Spoon. - Islands. - E and similar idea. - Environments. - Namespaces (various models and solutions thereof) - ClassBoxes and other stuff from Berne in this regard. Well, I am surely missing something but you get the picture. Dan Ingalls has expressed a solid interest in this Team and Craig Latta too. And some of us from the Packages team might be found here too - if not only just to be able to reflect on it. So... the list seems quiet compared to earlier - have we scared everyone away? :) Feedback please!!! regards, Göran
