Hi, In the MC rep at http://kilana.unibe.ch:8888/DGV there's a version of AardWorks-Gossip that we just tested with a couple of people on IRC. The code can form spontaneous networks and is able to traverse multiple NAT's. So what is there actually works, at least if you do not put your expectations of 'works' too high ;). There's a reasonable chance that actually trying to exchange data with other peers through the AWGPeer interface to the network will work, but you'd be the first to try. The next step will be a demo app. I am thinking of a chat application because it has a nice mix of searching and direct-routing. The idea is that you get a button or world menu entry or whatever that says you're available for chat. Registration is of course under your developer initials :). Then, when something wants to chat with CdG, the p2p network hunts for the location of CdG, and starts a chat session. Sounds neat and doable and the correct scope for a test app. But if anyone has a better idea for a killer app, shout. (other idea: point to a local MC directory and declare that a publicly readable directory on the network. Presto, your code can now be found by package name by anyone on the network. V2 will add caching by intermediate nodes ;)) For those who want to sniff around, I'll leave a test server running on a publicly accessible box until it crashes or runs out of memory or goes off to make coffee. After loading the latest package from MC, do: | peer | peer _ AWGPeer newOnUDPPort: 16rCA01. peer addPeer: UUID new host: (NetNameResolver addressForName: 'uk-1.aardworks.nl') port: 16rCA99. peer explore This should connect you to the bootstrap peer (note that this is just *a* introducer - you need to start somewhere but when the network is larger and especially when someone cobbles up a mechanism to export peer lists through out-of-band mechanisms like HTTP it can go away). If it is still running, root->peerId will hold your dynamically assigned peer id. root->peerList->entries should fill up with up to 30 addresses of other peers, most of them with very low hopCount. There's documentation in the code in classes that are named after their packages. If you itch to play with this, look at the sending-receiving protocol of AWGPeer. That is normally the only protocol you need for interaction with the network - it has methods to send data to an endpoint on a certain peer, and to register code blocks that are triggered when data comes in for a certain endpoint on the local peer (endpoints are very much like TCP or UDP ports). Of course, this currently all operates with ByteArrays, a neat higher protocol layer is one of the things next on the to-do list. Happy hacking, Cees

Hi! Sorry for being so silent the last week. Here are some more informations about my current interests and some ideas. My comitment is to work on a general concept and on the AV-Library project I started. As regards the general concept I would like to discuss the following: * everything (including the existing classes) should be packaged, right? * what packages do we want? Few big ones or many smaller ones? * what categories do we want * set up a wiki to organize our ideas, resources (links, docs) and examples * there are a lot of interesting open source multimedia projects that could serve as examples on how to do it right or not. Examples that come to my mind are sndkit and musickit, two objective-c frameworks that seem to be quite mature. * I would like to compile a list of existing classes and projects which could reuse and what is good and bad and needs to be changed. E.g. Graphics-Files category AbstractSound class SoundRecorder class AIFFFileReader class (should be moved into different category) AudioVideoLibrary packages OGG package etc... As regards my AV Library I'm about to release a new version. In the next days I will do some profiling and write code to manipulate audio/video sync in an AVI container. And if time permits I want to start work on reading and writing ID3 tags. In the long term I would like to add mpeg4 playback and mpeg2 handling (a dvd publishing app would be nice to have in squeak). While working on the AV lib I stumbled across the following two issues that are not strictly multimeda related but my cause us some trouble. 1. There is no buffered filestream in squeak. When reading multimedia stuff you often have to examine each byte. So you do a lot of method calls to get the next byte. That implies a primitive call each time. Not very fast. 2. I think there is a need for OS-Thread support if only to avoid dealing with it in plugins we may want to write. The topic pops up from time to time here but nothing has been done so far, right? While the first point is easy to solve, the second is definitely not. Oncy we have concluded on an overall structure there should be no restrictions on what people want to contribute. And finally to answer one of Brads questions: I don't think we are a team, yet. But we should strive to be one. Martin

Assuming that you've loaded: * Monticello * the SqueakMap version of Refactory (Refactory-md.3.8.12) * my latest RB improvements (http://bike-nomad.com/squeak/Refactory-nk.3830.mcd) you can try out some interesting tricks with the FinderTool and the new RewriteTool: For instance: * to find sends to globals that they don't understand (I have a Lint rule for this, but...) hi list i'm pretty new to squeak environment... i'm using puredata for sequencing data. i would like to build a gui to control puredata using the OSC protocol. can any body explain me how to deal with osc in squeak? can anybody give me url of "howto" about squeak can anybody post for example a slider who send is name and value throught osc to an ip and port number. thanks all nicolas

Proposed web site

Hi, One of the long standing complaints about squeak has been the squeak.org website has gotten out of date. One proposal is at http://edoneel.chaosnet.org/squeak/index.html. Some comments: - This is an attempt to make a minimial website, ie, let's keep to an absolute minimum the bits that have to be directly maintained and push most of the maintenace off to the squeak swiki. This means that, basically, the web site will only be as good as the Swiki, so, keep that swiki up to date. I'm leaning very hard towards the idea that squeak.org should be one web page. - I tried not to overload the page with too many links. I may not have succeeded. While a large chunk of the squeak community are programmers, not all of us are. Unlike ruby-lang.org, perl.org, python.org, et al which are aimed at programmers we need to appeal to a broader group. Ergo the proposed squeak.org is less (I think) busy. - Yes, I borrowed the Mozilla Europe stylesheet. I think I can do that, but, if not, the look can be changed. It's all CSS. Blue seems like a reasonable squeak color. - The wording of all of this is subject to change. I am alleged to natively speak some form of English, but I sure can't write it. - Since I'm alergic to wearing all black, I'm obviously not a designer either. Apparently some real black dressed designer people will have a go at the design and try to make it better. If you've already commented and I seem to have ignored your comment, could you send it again? I didn't ignore it, I just got overloaded. And finally, I wanted to put a pointer to Tweak, but, tweak is too common a name and therefore I couldn't find a good web page. Could someone point me in the right direction there? If someone would like to make a good "other big projects with squeak" page on the swiki I'd also like to point to that.
