[ANN][VMM] SlangBrowser - browser support for C generator

I implemented interactive Slang code browsing as a VMMaker enhancement for Squeak 3.8 and 3.9. I'm not sure what to do with this, so for now I just stuck it on the swiki at <http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/5916>. After loading the change set, you can select either 'translate to C' or 'translate to inlined C' in the 'What to show' menu of a normal browser (any Browser or MessageSet). Translated C code it displayed in the browser code window. It's quite fast, because a cache of code generators is maintained to support browsing. If a translatable class or method is changed, all affected cache entries are invalidated, and new code generators are created on demand. Anyone who has ever gone digging through the generated C source for the VM or for a plugin is sure to appreciate this. Dave

Glorp has a similar idea called Dialect which it uses to level the platforms. improving the quality of the image

One of my goals for 3.10 is to improve the quality of the image. Our first release (coming soon!) will have only green tests, and each following release will have only green tests. But there are many other things that could be checked automatically. For example, there should be no unimplemented methods in the released image. Unfortunately, there are a lot right now, so we can't make that rule. But I would like to have all these fixed by the end of the 3.10 cycle and to be able to enforce the rule that no release has any unimplemented methods. Jerome Peace has been working on getting rid of unimplemented methods and has a lot of fixes. You can find them at http://bugs.impara.de/view.php?id=4544 This is the original Mantis issue that he has been working on. Most of the fixes are in "child" issues, but you can find them from that page. You can help by checking Jerome's fixes. If you are familiar with the code he is changing, read it and see whether you can spot anything wrong. If you can, post a note. If you can't, please post a note that, as far as you can tell, it looks good. If you aren't that familiar with the code, but are working on an application that uses it, please file in the changes and try out your application. Again, report on the results! If two or three people try out some changes and everybody thinks they are OK, the release team will mark the issue as "resolved" and put it in the next release. We will make sure the code doesn't break any tests. But if you don't try out the code then we'll have to try it, as well, and that will take a lot more time. So, you can help us get more work done by checking out these fixes. Thanks! -Ralph Johnson

Hi all, I would like to help to the community, and, because there are people like me, with difficult learning Squeak/Smalltalk, I want to help them. I have ZyoForma, an e-learning platform and I will give it to offer Free Squeak Courses. The platform is based on moodle, and all (teachers, developers), can use it for his own courses to help learning Squeak or Object Oriented Concepts. The courses can have chats, forums, wikis, cuestionaries, and all the necessary content to make an online course. There are some conditions: - The course must be free (as speech, and as a beer). Creative Commons license or similar. - The courses must be in English. Other languages are supported but only under translating others. This will help to get all the possible courses on a main language like English. If you want, for example, publish a course about morphic, you need it on English and then, other language you want to publish. You can translate courses from english to your language if you want. I think this, can help existing wikis and webs to be more easy to learn Squeak and related. IMHO something like this is necessary, because for some people, is very difficult learn Squeak and his concepts browsing only the image, Probably it's the best way, but more people disturbs spending time without results. First, is necessary have a minimal concepts, then, you will be preapared to browse the image and other things. If you are familiarized with e-learning platforms, ZyoForma accept SCORM[1] files. I'm looking for two bug fixes for 3.8

that I used to have as little .cs files and can't find anymore. I have tried to search mantis - I cannot figure out its wacky 'filter' feature. The bugs are: 1) Too much stuff logged into changes file. Basically, if you performa a doit in the workspace, the entire workspace contents shows up in the change file rather than just the code you executed. 2) cmd-. opens a bunch of debuggers and hangs the image. User interrupts never result in a runnable system. I know I've had fixes for these in the past but no amount of googling or mantis fiddling is coughing them up. -Todd Blanchard

Finding out how many displays attached to computer (Sophie? Ffenestri?)

Hi, I want to use OSProcess to launch a VNC server. If multiple monitors are attached to the computer, I want the VNC server to display the monitor that Squeak is not on (I'll need to generate the appropriate command-line argument from within Squeak). Has anyone (Sophie? Ffenestri?) done any work to make Squeak aware of how many displays are available, and which one Squeak is running on? The desired platforms are (in order of decreasing importance) Windows, OS X, and Linux. Thanks, Josh

same-named class and global vars

I am trying to finalize a packages distribution for 3.9, and I discovered a sad problem: SmallDEVS and Exupery cannot be loaded at the same time. The reason is a sad one: SmallDEVS has a class named Timer, and Exupery has a class variable named Timer. If the system were to allow loading these two packages, they would almost certainly coexist just fine. It is un-Squeaklike to be so worried about a potential error (accessing the wrong variable), that we immediate cause a total failure (rejection by the compiler). Can we at least allow this situation at *load* time, even if most developers are against allowing it in the IDE ? At load time it is too late, and you may as well go for it IMHO. It would also be consistent with our creating fresh global variables in "Undefined", as a way to work around semi-broken code modules. http://bugs.impara.de/view.php?id=5905 -Lex

ToolBuilder-based Browser?

Hi all. Is there a version of the Browser which has been made using ToolBuilder? I'm modifying the Browser now to support Namespaces ( http://www.squeaksource.com/SecureSqueak, strictly work in progress), and it's become apparent to me that it could be done better. I thought that if nobody else has done it then I could spend a bit more time refactoring the Browser and then contribute the re-usable portions back to Squeak. Michael.

Setting up a simple Wiki...

Hi! I am planning to set up a simple wiki for personal use (noting my tasks, thoughts, etc.) and maybe more. I decided to use SmallWiki, as it seems to work really fine in practice (www.squeak.org is very nice). At first I tried Pier, but it was a bit complicated for me, as I am not familiar with Seaside and I really don't want to develop web applications. So I downloaded the SmallWiki prepared image from http://homepage.mac.com/jborden23/FileSharing3.html. Loading from SqueakMap to 3.9 did not really work out (getting a dependency message and after ignoring it getting another error on a non-existing method in Monticello?). The prepared image is a Squeak 3.7 one and works just fine but I did run into troubles when trying to configure SmallWiki. So here are some questions, maybe you can help me: 1.) I don't really understand the difference between roles and users. If I enter the wiki, I have automatically anonymous role? Why can't I edit any page then? 2.) I tried to protect a page, that should not be viewable by other users then admin. I executed the script I found in the SmallWiki FAQ: (server root at: 'Secret') roles: (OrderedCollection with: (BasicRole name: 'anonymous')) " this role has no permissions " but I could still access the page when I normally entered it without any login. Am I doing something wrong? 3.) How can I remove actions (RSS for example) from the upper right corner? I think that's pretty much it. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance, Elod
