There is a method in the GeniePlugin who's stack is too deep to compile with closures. Here are some workarounds and solutions in increasing levels of difficulty: 1. since the GeniePlugin is inessential simply move it to another package and ignore the problem (this is what we have done at Qwaq). 2a. Since the method is never executed one can temporarily change the stack limit (e.g. CompiledMethod classPool at: #LargeFrame put: 57) and load the package, reverting the stack limit after loading (Compiledmethod classPool at: #LargeFrame put: 56) 2b. change CompiledMethod>>needsFrame: so that proceeding from the error still creates a compiled method (i.e. remove the ^ return from the method so that it reads needsFrameSize: newFrameSize "Set the largeFrameBit to accomodate the newFrameSize" | largeFrameBit header | largeFrameBit *:=* 16r20000. (self numTemps + newFrameSize) > LargeFrame ifTrue: [self error: 'Cannot compile -- stack including temps is too deep']. header *:=* self objectAt: 1. Both of these are tedious but since you're probably not going to be changing the method and since Monticello won't recompile it once it is loaded it'll sit there quite happily once compiled. 3. refactor the GeniePlugin method into an outer args parser and an inner engine method and solve the problem. Since VMMaker will inline anyway this shouldn't make performance worse. I haven't done this because I'm not the author and it is quite a complex method. 4. modify the Closure compiler so that it reuses temporaries in optimized blocks. The method compiles with the BlueBook compiler because in 1 to: n do: [:i| .......]. ... 1 to: n do: [:i| .......]. the two block variables "i" are the same "physical" variable stored in the same location in the home context (because BlueBook blocks do not have local arguments or temporaries). But in the Closure compiler they are logically distinct variables and if the blocks were real and not optimized they would occupy different "physical" locations. Since they are optimized blocks their temporaries do get allocated in the home context, but they occupy different locations, and hence the stack size is larger in the Closure compiler. The Closure compiler could be modified to use a more sophisticated temporary variable scope analysis that would allow it to determine that the first block's "i" is out of scope when the second block is compiled and hence that the location can be reused. This is non-trivial because it requires rewriting much of the temporary scope management (see TempVariableNode>>scope[:] & senders of scope:). If I had hit the stack limit in more than this one method I probably would have tried to solve this but for now there are fatter fish to fry. I plan that eventually the Cog VM will support a CompiledMethod format that will have a higher argument, temp and total frame size limit, but this isn't a priority right now. What is the greatest number of CPU cycles that could possibly be expended on the problem of adding 2 + 2? Have you ever wondered how to utilize the latest multi-core hardware in the most pointless and inefficient manner possible? Read on... Motivated by a question from Casimiro de Almeida Barreto <casimiro.barreto(a)gmail.com>, I have added dup2() support to OSProcess, and wired up OS pipes to forked Squeak images to enable sending and receiving objects through reference streams to a headless, transient child Squeak. Code is in the latest OSProcessPlugin, OSProcess, and CommandShell on SqueakSource. The result of this is a mechanism for sending objects to a forked image for remove evaluation, returning a result to the parent Squeak image as follows: addTwoPlusTwoInChildSqueak "Fork a headless child Squeak. Send three objects to the child, and read one object returned from the child. The child Squeak uses the three objects to compute a result, which it sends back to its parent Squeak before exiting." Hi List, Juan: I've in mind a little app to a sort of hobbistic utility. The main strength I need is the ability to run on lot of different platforms, mobile included. That should be a perfect project to Cuis (assuming I may afford the development of a decent UI on the new Morphic you did)? I didn't used Cuis so much yet, but look fast and portable, exactly the things I'm needing. Any screenshot of apps you developed with Cuis will be useful also. Thanks! -- Germán S. You will need to build your own OSPP plugin to make use of this. I also think that I have a solution to your overall problem. You want to call a long-running function using FFI, and be able to see the stdout output from that function within Squeak. You also want to run the FFI call without blocking the VM (otherwise your Squeak image will be blocked for the duration of the FFI call). I have made updates to OSProcessPlugin, OSProcess, and CommandShell that permit this to be done. The changes add support for the dup2() system call to OSPP, for redirection of the standard IO streams for a running Squeak image, and for a PipeableOSProcess proxy that forks a headless background Squeak connected to your Squeak image through OS pipes. The basic idea is to call this to run the FFI function: PipeableOSProcess forkHeadlessSqueakAndDoThenQuit: aLongRunningCallToFFI. Here is a complete example: "Put your FFI call into a block. This is just an example, so replace it with your actual method that calls FFI." aLongRunningCallToFFI := [ "self myFFIFunctionCall" (1 to: 5) do: [:i | (Delay forSeconds: 2) wait. Is there any way of reopening OSProcess thisOSProcess stdOut to a given FileStream?

Hello, OSProcess thisOSProcess stdOut nextPutAll: 'This is a test'. will print "This is a test" in the shell that started squeak. OSProcess thisOSProcess stdOut close. successfully closes stdOut. Under linux, if I open a new file after closing stdout it will have the FD #1 (given stdin is not closed too) and I would successfully have redirected stdOut to that file. But in squeak if I do something like: fd := FileStream fileNamed: 'aGenericPipeline'. fd readWrite. OSProcess thisOSProcess setStdOut. OSProcess thisOSProcess stdOut nextPutAll: 'This is a test',Character lf asString. Things get weird... (to the point that squeak VM crashes). I also tried to do: mkfifo fifo squeak > fifo But squeak just won't start... Any suggestions on how reopen stdOut to a desired point other than the default?
