Magma with 3.9 : Outage when creating repository

Hello, I've an Outage when I try : MagmaRepositoryController create: 'c:\myMagmaFolder' root: Dictionary new ,I've seen this probleme has been already discuss in the mailing list but I've not understood the solution! I have to load another version of magma? (at this moment my version is the server version from squeaksource repository) Thank you. Florent.

Bugfix and a Query question

Hiya! Ok, I stumbled on this code: minimumSearchSpaceSizeUsing: aMaLargeCollectionManager | calculateSizeBlock | calculateSizeBlock _ [ : each | each minimumSearchSpaceSizeUsing: aMaLargeCollectionManager ]. ^ self isConjunction ifTrue: [ self terms detectMin: calculateSizeBlock ] ifFalse: [ self terms detectSum: calculateSizeBlock ] ...which wrongly assumes that detectMin: returns the size instead of the term itself. I changed "self terms detectMin: calculateSizeBlock" to "(self terms collect: calculateSizeBlock) min". ...which creates an intermediate collection, but whatever. :) Not sure how come this have gone unnoticed, perhaps there is no test exercising this as a conjunction. And yes, detectSum: and is dubiously named - it is no "detect" IMHO - it should be called sum:. On to my question - is it planned that where: queries could also operate on attributes that are not indexed? Even if it is planned I can probably not wait for that - I will have to split my code into a where: followed by a "normal" select: I guess. Or actually add select:upTo: to the reader that will return up to x number of objects. regards, Göran

Persisting float number

I have found that when persisting the number 0.1, closing the connection, openning it again and fetching the value I got 0.1000000014901161 I saw that problem in a deep graph, but the problem seems repeatable (with squeak 3.9) I took a look at the serialization process of Float without much understanding Hilaire

newbie questions

I have a few newbie questions related to Magma, probably most of these questions are related to OODB. May be it could be useful to collect such questions. In the end user application, is it fine to keep open a session to Magma? After closing a Magma session, what become a local object of the persisted object? If one re-open a session can the remote object be 'automatically' updated from the local object in case it changed? With an open session, is it fine to read a persisted object outside of a commit:? Is commit: only to be used when you want to persist an object? Hilaire

Some more questions: Are the Magma OODB portable from one architecture to another? If I create and populate a repository in a Magma Server running on Linux, can I transfer all the Magma file repository in a Magma server running in Windows? Can I switch the use of a Magma repository in single mode then in server mode, and vis-versa? Regarding the readStrategy I don not understand very clearly the difference between the minimumDepth: and readToDeapth: keyword argument? maSession readStrategy: ((MaReadStrategy minimumDepth: 1) onAny: Form readToDepth: 999 ; yourself). In this example why using 999, will 1 or 2 be just enought? Thanks, Hilaire

One more newbie question

Here is a situation I am wondering how Magma will deal it -- or any OODB. Let's say we have MyApplication where is defined a class User with an attribute 'company' referencing an instance of the Company class. Now MyApplication is runned in a Squeak instance A and in a Squeak instance B. So we have myApplicationA and myApplicationB running in two different Squeak images. In myApplicationA, userA instance is defined. In myApplicationB, userB instance is defined. userA and userB's company attribute is set to be semantically identical, ie userA company = userB company. Of course it is not the same instances as there are physically located in different images. Now userA is persisted in a MagmaDB, and userB in the same MagmaDB. Now I am wondering will company attribute of userA and userB be the same (same memory location) or be duplicated? Hilaire

Magma + Form objects ?

I got this odd problem when persisting From instances. When I do the following: -- maSession := MagmaSession openLocal: '/home/hilaire/MagmaDB'. maSession connectAs: 'hilaire' maSession commit: [maSession root at: 'test' put: ((WatchMorph new imageFormDepth: 16)]. maSession disconnect;closeRepository -- Then when I quit Squeak (without saving the image) and start it again and do: -- maSession := MagmaSession openLocal: '/home/hilaire/MagmaDB'. maSession connectAs: 'hilaire' (maSession root at: 'test') display -- I got an error message from the BitBlt>>copyBits: Bad BitBlt arg (Fraction?); proceed to convert. After proceeding, it is display fine. Inspecting the Form does not reveal anything special. Any tips about this problem? Hilaire

Outage when installing Magma repositotory

I have installed the latest MagmaServerLoader on Squeak image 3.9. When creating a repository with: controller := MagmaRepositoryController create: '/home/hilaire/Travaux/these/iFichier/Squeak-these/MagmaDB' root: Dictionary new I got the following warning: ----- Outage occurred while writing system-definitions! Will now attempt to repair. Select Proceed to continue, or close this window to cancel the operation. ------- However the MagmaDB folder contains the following files: -rw-r--r-- 1 hilaire hilaire 98 2006-10-06 16:58 applied.images -rw-r--r-- 1 hilaire hilaire 84068 2006-10-06 16:57 commitPackages -rw-r--r-- 1 hilaire hilaire 30983 2006-10-06 16:57 objects -rw-r--r-- 1 hilaire hilaire 3205 2006-10-06 16:58 objects.idx

This is somthing I'd like for Magma to support directly, but I'm facing a mountain of work at the moment, so I can't say when I'll get to work on it. In the meantime, Göran's team is building Gjaller, where I think they use a Prevayler approach to do this.
