Java vs Squeak Page

Hi, I need to explain to one of my customer why they can use Squeak instead of Java in a new project. "The project is a server based payment software." Do you have any good http pages ? So they can read and build an opinion ? Best Regards W. P.S I want to keep my customer so please "Smalltalk religious pages" ;)

StandardFileStream>>truncate:

Here's something to make you scratch your head. When would the #size of aStandardFileStream ever change merely by closing and then opening the file? myFileStream size "3300" myFileStream close; open myFileStream size "50" Ok, don't scratch; I've already done that. The answer is when you #truncate: to 50 the file, it is not reflected by #size until the file is closed and reopened. It's #position does recognize the truncation however, if it was beyond the truncation point of the now-shorter file, it reflects position at the end of the file. This is my first time exploring truncate: so I don't now whether this is a bug. But I've opened it on Mantis just in case. It does appear to actually shorten the file and release the space back to the OS; is this platform-independent?

Can anyone point me to the latest Squeak VM 3.8 for Mac OS as well as the latest 3.8 image file? Also, can I customize an image to my liking under Max OS and then simply copy the image to a linux VM and it would just work? Calling C++ external functions.

Hi, does someone know whether something special has to be done in order to call C++ external functions using FFI? I know functions symbols are not the same for C and C++ libraries but I don't know what name I have to use to refer to a function. Thanks for your help.

here insert explanation of what you were doing, suspect changes you've made and so forth. [lets see if I can do this right this time... Okay, I think I got it to work but this "Mister Postman" application still has HORRIBLE, usibility deficits.. It relies on the user's clarvoyance in knowing to hit "alt-S" to make it do what every other mail application in the known universe does automaticly... ] I was attempting to generate a 3.8 VM on a squeaky 3.8 image, I did my normal routine of heaping on all of the plugins as internal, -- I don't trust ld.so at all and think that its authors are among the most evil people ever to sit down at a keyboard... I was supprised to get a debug box during this excercise... I think what's going on is that a receient refactoring of Symbol broke the first line of MessageNode>> asTranslatorNode... The missing symbol #key is, I beleive, a "red herring" because the CPU should have taken the ifTrue path... I think the code "isMemberOf:" should be replaced with something like "isMemberOrSubclassOf:"...
