Omnibase on Mac OS X and Squeak 3.8

Has anyone been able to get OmniBase to run in Max OS X Tiger with Squeak 3.8 VM and Squeak 3.8 Full Image? Can anyone help? I loaded the Monticello packages fine. However, there is still the problem with the file locking (I guess), since that seems to be the error I'm getting when creating a new database. Thanks, Daniel

m17n fallout in VMMaker/MC

When loading VMMaker into a 3.8-6665 image using the latest version of MC (as provided by SM, anyway) I get a warning about two methods that seem to be in the no longer extant class MultiString. To be honest, I had no clue they were even there. Post-string-rework, there is no such class. So far as I can see String has a perfectly ok pair of corresponding methods. I think it's a great idea because students can learn principles of formal language, automation, and algorithms without spending so much time on complex language syntax and multiple tools/interfaces for design, editing, compilation, debugging, and visualization. The danger is that because Squeak has so many tools and methods for sharing code outside the image, browsing code in the image and just so much code, that students can be easily distracted, frustrated and overwhelmed. It is essential to design the lessons to provide clear boundaries for exploration: e.g., use _this_ tool to find the answer to _this_ problem and don't worry about all that other stuff now. EToys is a good example of an envirionment that keep the focus on the visual objects on the desktop so that students aren't confronted with all the code in the system browser. My (limited) experience with Smalltalk in undergraduate introductory programming classes has been very positive. Students can learn the important stuff easily and quickly produce working programs because the development environment is so well integrated. With non-CS majors, I don't expect you have the problem of then trying to explain why other languages and environments are so different. Rich

how to create browser plugin image

Hi all, I would like to know what exactly is a difference between "ordinary" Squeak image and the one used for browser plugin. It is possible to use any image with web browser plugin, but the project or source file specified in <embed> tag is not loaded at startup. Any info? thanks -- .:jbk:. Jan B. Krejci

using a string as method name

Hi I an searching for course material appropiate for elementary or middle school but irf you have links for higher level thens I would certainly be interested in reviewing the materials. I intend to build a small course for young students and Squek has been recommended.
