Sorry - a few more details that I should have included... Image Squeak3.7 latest update: #5989 Desktop size 1268@927 (just what it happened to be) OS Windows XP Pro SP2, fully updated, in all cases Some VM settings DeferUpdate=1 ReduceCPUUsage=1 ReduceCPUInBackground=0 PriorityBoost=1 > I *guess* that the display chip is the largest variable here, after > all it needs to do all the actual copying of data. Yup, presumably. But I was surprised at the broad disparity. Another candidate that I tried (a new Panasonic laptop, that I don't have access to at the moment) seemed to be taking nearly ten times as long as the Toshiba! Maybe the answer is something like "Oh, nobody runs the Panasonic with the default device driver; you need to download the latest from ...". But I wanted to check with the list in case this was a known phenomenon in porting Squeak. All the best Aran

I retract my comment about the Berne Convention, because I don't see it in there despite an occasional web page saying it is. On the other hand, it does appear that authors can easily put things into public domain in practically all countries. Am I mistaken? I can't find one exception, and every site I can find on google agrees that authors in most countries are free to can disclaim ownership and release their material to the public. Here's a typical comment: The rules vary from country to country. You know what it means and you can safely assume it will hold up as expected in most jurisdictions. Two people have now claimed that you cannot disclaim warranty if you release something to the public domain, but I don't see how that is true. You just do it. Do not attempt to use it in a nuclear power facility, as a dinner recipe, as light reading, [etc. etc. etc.] Thanks, Patrick, for clearing up what was meant about mixing BSD and GPL code. I still do not see that it is safe, even if FSF agrees with your analysis [1]. First, it is important (and FSF agrees) that you distinguish BSD from BSD-without-advertising, which the original post I responded to did not. Second, MIT-L (for example) requires that an exact copy of MIT-L be included in derivative works, while GPL says just the opposite: you can make any change you like in a derivative work, including, I would assume, removing the work's copy of MIT-L. MIT-L therefore has an extra provision that GPL does not, and I don't see how one can legally re-release an MIT-L program under GPL. It seems like a stark difference: MIT-L says you must include the notice, and GPL says you may change the work in any way you like. Why doesn't Morph's drawOn get called when Main Squeak window unminimized.

Hello, I have subclassed Morph and overridden its drawOn. I found that it doesn't get called when the main Squeak window is maximized after minimization or when it becomes visible after an overlapping window moves away. What is the function that I must override so that redrawing takes place even on unminimization or movement of overlapping window. I am drawing text using an external dll with FFI which directly draws in the Squeak window. Any suggestions/pointers would be a great help. It isn't necessary that I use Morphic if it is not possible with it. Thank You, Himanshu. -- (9885420248)

Assigning .image to Squeak

I have never assigned the .image type to Squeak on my Windows pc at work. I never knew whether or not that would break any other apps. Has anyone ever seen other apps which use .image files for their apps? I am asking primarily about Windows, but really on any OS? Just wanted to know, if it would cause any problems anywhere. I might want to deploy some simple little app to a friends computer which would be much easier if they could just click on the image file. Thanks. Jimmie

Numbers and formatting

Hello, I writing a little personal app which has parsed a directory tree and gathered the sizes of all the files (mp3s). I want to present it to myself in a nice format. I don't want to see that my mp3 size is 61,599,788 bytes, but rather 58.7MB. I didn't find a method of conversion for such. I may have missed such. So the only way I've really found to get the 58.7mb is kind of ugly. Below is my code. ------------------------------- niceByteSizesFromBytes: numberBytes | mb | mb := (numberBytes asFloat)/(1024*1024). mb := (((mb asScaledDecimal: 2) asString) allButLast: 2),'mb'. ^ mb ------------------------------- It works, it gives me what I want. But is there a better way. I've scoured the Integer, Float protocols for appropriate methods. But alas I didn't see what I wanted. I am not a math or cs guy so I could have easily missed something. I don't know what floor and ceiling... are so... :) Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated. Jimmie

Just to add another data point, cut or copy in a headless squeak displaying via vnc / RFB server on a debian sarge (uml) definitely crashes the image every time. But the same image is ok running local in KDE on mepis 3.3 on my local machine. Hi Daniel, for me, the key to the answer to your question is the phrase "totally different industry." If this is true, it seems there would be little chance that the Customers would need to be in the same running image, nor would they need to be developed together. Therefore I wouldn't worry too much about trying to factor the two Customer classes into a single, grand Customer superclass, if it won't ever be commingled in practice. In fact, doing so could potentially increase cost. For example, the two groups of developers may have their own ideas about what belongs in the generic superclass Customer. So then you have developers spending time reconciling code by two completely disparate industries. Even if theres a remote chance of the two programs needing to co-exist in an image, you can use refactoring-tools to meld the code at that time. But keep it simpler in the meantime. Remember, if you can solve the problem of ultimate malleability of software, you no longer need to worry about up-front planning of "ultimate" classes.. We still need a balance of both, but I believe the future is in the former. That's my view, anyhow.. - Chris

Fixing the look of squeak in 3.9.

Hi all I was at Lugano and I did yet another squeak demo to young programmers, they were impressed but after they show me what they were doing in Java and ....I was impressed by the quality of the look of their applications and I thought that if we do not do anything about look we should not say that we want to have more squeakers but keep playing between us. So does anybody wants that Squeak can talk with young programmer of 2000? I would really like that Squeak out of the box look improves. Here is what I suggest, we have different possibilities - (1) either load a skin package and use a nice skin - (2) load the LookEnhancement available at MCHttpRepository location: 'http://squeak.saltypickle.com/LookEnhancements' user: '' password: '' This package is doing a lot of overrides so we cannot load it simply in 3.9 and it would be better to have it inside the image. - (3) speed the changes of diego - (4) Do a competition of the better look for squeak -- here the criteria should be that the system should be cool -- responsive -- as less intrusive as possible Stef
