Accessing variables through sending messages

Hello, I know there are some Self experts in this mailing list, that's why I am asking a question related to it there. What would be the best strategy to have variables not accessed by using their index, but rather by sending messages correspondong to their accessors/mutators. I feel that an efficient implementation would require new bytecode, therefore hardcoding this in the VM. Markus Denker has an implementation that use an object-as-compiled trick to delay the recompilation of a method, but the assumption was not to modify the VM. Anyone can confirm or infirm what I wrote ? Increasing image size, how to reduce?

Hi every body! The size of my image is always increasing. Squeak 3.7, 216 Mb. An analysis (SpaceTally new printSpaceAnalysis) shows that 75% is used for Bitmap. I don't know where the bitmaps are, and where are they coming from. How can get rid of them? Note: To reduce the image size, I already tried the following: Space analyse -> SpaceTally new printSpaceAnalysis. Empty the trash -> Utilities emptyScrapsBook. Clear command history -> CommandHistory resetAllHistory. Manual Garbage Collect call -> Smalltalk garbageCollect. Thank you in advance for your help. Patrick Chénais

Large collections in 3.8

I want to use IdentityDictionaries with large number of objects (10Ks). Historically, large collections were a problem for sqeuak in two areas - garbage collection and hashing. Is this still true in 3.8? There's a LargeCollections package on SM but I can't load it at the moment (server not responding), does anyone have a copy? rado

Hello Hello!! Another problem of size: While compiling a new method, I get this message: ' You have reached the size limit of the changes file. You must take action now to reduce it. Close this error. Do not attempt to proceed.' So my question is: How to do? Which action should I take? Many thanks in advance Patrick Chénais

Debugger very slow when launched from TestRunner

When you launch the debugger from TestRunner by clicking on an error list item, the PreDebugWindow is very slow to be drawn and it seem that each part of the window and invalidated area are drawn and flushed to the Display. The back buffering (draw all parts the flush the affected area to the Display) of the Display seem bypassed. Other one has seen this ? or just me ? Alain

[BUG][ToolB] Buttons in panel not disabled initially

When I create a PluggableButton with an #enabled: selector, then it is only disabled after issuing a #changed: notification for that selector. IMHO it should be disabled when displaying the interface. - Bert -

It looks like ToolBuilder-SUnit-cwp.7 derives from ToolBuilder-SUnit- cwp.5 without merging in ToolBuilder-SUnit-cwp.6. Was that intentional? - Bert -

New SqueakMap Loader 1.02

Hi! Ok, I managed to fix a few things and get a 1.02 out of SMLoader. I haven't marked it as "official" yet, but nothing much has changed. New stuff: - Class comments added to some wrapper classes. - New windowColorSpecification, imitating TestRunner. This should make it look right in 3.8 at least. Haven't tested it yet in different versions. - Added to Tools flap registry, but you need to run "Flaps reinstateDefaultFlaps" to get it in. - Deselection of categories fixed (as fix posted by Samuel J. J. Bronson, marked as closed in Mantis) - Now SMLoader will ask to load updates (instead of always doing it) if: a) The map is older than 10 days (checking the file on disk) b) There is no map on disk. - Small fixes and alignment with TestRunner class side methods. (assuming it is an example of a good Squeak citizen) regards, Göran

In the course of our project, we developed a client for the Open Archives Initiative (http://www.openarchives.org/) protocol. We put it into a separate package so that is usable in other projects as well. The OAI spec allows "service providers" to harvest metadata from "data providers" (mostly academic institutions - collections of papers, theses, etcetera); the idea is that service providers add search facilities, etcetera. We will harvest OAI archives in our P2P network on special nodes that will listen for search queries and respond with matching records from the archives - the effect is that you publish the whole collection of an institution on the P2P network. We will publish the package in SqueakSource later, in the meantime, just shout if you want the code. Regards, Cees
