Raw graphics performance

Hi Doing some comparisons of PCs as preparation to buying a new laptop, I've noticed some unexpectedly large differences in Squeak's graphics performance. I narrowed it down to the speed of DisplayScreen>>forceToScreen: For example, running the following within an identical 3.7 image on four different systems gave the per-loop timings listed below. Time millisecondsToRun: [ 1000 timesRepeat: [ Display forceToScreen: Display boundingBox ] ] Toshiba dynabook SS LX/190 DK [laptop] 1.6 GHz Pentium M 730 NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 TE 64M / 6600 TE 128M 6.0ms NEC LaVie LR 700/9 [laptop] 1.6 GHz Pentium ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 series 8.1ms Dell Dimension 8200 [large desktop] 2 GHz Pentium 4 NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS 19.0ms Dell Inspiron 8000 [chunky laptop] 1 GHz Pentium III (not sure about the driver) 33.2ms Processor zorch alone doesn't explain it; is the secret in the display drivers? Or something to do with video memory? Or something that could be tweaked on a given computer? Fixing the look of squeak in 3.9.

It would be good if I and/or Ben Schroeder could pair up with someone who knows it because there are just enough nuances that it would be best for us to review to fix small glitches in our Look Enhancments (i.e. small text boxes with scrollbars, border widths are not exactly precise, etc...). We also did not "care" about maintaining the "alternate window look" in preferences. If you toggle that option off then all goes bad on style (windows are black). Lastly, SMLoader window lost it's paneColor in 3.8 and beyond. Not sure why, but I keep having to add paneColor override to get the pale yellow Squeak Map loader back otherwise it is transparent. This only happens when using our Look Enhancements, but it clearly used to have this override in 3.7. So, yes, some polish would be needed to make this the defacto style. An update of my interface to wxWidgets is available at http://homepage.mac.com/rgayvert/wxsqueak.html Below are some notes on what has changed in this version. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated, particularly on the Linux versions. .. Rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- - Built with wxWidgets 2.6.1 - Initial Linux/GTK2 version - Binaries for Fedora Core 3 and Ubuntu (Debian) - Downloads have been split into platform-specific VMs, shared source, and common files Notes on the Linux version: - Build with 3.7b5 source - configure has not been modified properly for new builds; see config/WxChanges.txt for modifications - No VM changes have been made for event handling, so some demos are sluggish - Binaries are stripped debug builds - Listbook demo works, but is extremely slow to come up.

sigsegv on cut/paste/copy action

Hi, I was working on a project in squeak today and it worked fine, but now, whenever I try to cut, copy or paste now the image exits and on the console it says: Segmentation fault 1102275632 Clipboard>clipboardText 1102274696 Clipboard class>clipboardText 1102274604 ParagraphEditor>clipboardText ..... ..... 1102251704 PasteUpMorph>doOneCycle 1099078364 [] in Project class>spawnNewProcess 1099078456 [] in BlockContext>newProcess (pasted only the top and bottom, it's pretty long)... Needless to say, it's pretty annoying. I tried looking for a solution on the net but I can't find anything. The squeak version I'm using is Squeak 2.7 lastest update: #5989. Does anyone know how to fix this? Johan

Virtual console (tty & pst) and Extended Serial Port

Hi, I'm playing a bit with the ability of Squeak to talk with /dev/tty and /dev/pts/x, and encountered some problems with ExtendedSerialPort. I first used the classic SerialPort, and with some modification in the sqUnixSerial.c ( /* portNum 0=/dev/ttyS0, etc. */ /* include 1 byte for NUL at end */ #define PORT_NAME_SIZE 11 static const char serialPortBaseName[] = "/dev/pts/0"; /* #define PORT_NAME_SIZE 10 static const char serialPortBaseName[] = "/dev/tty2"; */), it is possible to write and read without problems on the virtual console. With SerialPortExtended, writing is not a problem, modulo some modifications attached with this mail. I modified eagain, oonblock, etc... Maybe should we create a new class SerialPortExtendedSessionLinux because I found for instance a different value for eagain (11) in the linux system than the original one (32 for BSD one I guess)... Probably Linux/GNU system is not unix :-) Oh yes, comments are welcome on this piece of code ! Because ExtendedSerialPort seems to have been created with modem communication in mind, and I've had to do some weird things (see in the attached file, in primOpenPort:..., (targetFileName value includesSubString: 'ttyS') - set speed of a virtual console gives an error) Anyway, when I try to read characters, there is a problem : here is a trace after the function read of ExtendedSerialPortPlugin ( bytesRead = read(fd, array+startIndex-1, (size_t)count); fprintf (stderr, "after reading buffer number of bytesRead : %i\n", bytesRead ); fprintf (stderr, "errno : %i\n", errno ); ) after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 ... etc and when I hit some keys, nothing changes but when I hit return, suddenly : after reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 bafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 oafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 nafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 jafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 oafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 uafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 rafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 it displays the keys and return to the loop : after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 ... The behaviour is different with SerialPort, in fact, it is as expected : bytesRead = 0 when I hit nothing, and 1 when a key is pressed. My first guess was that the file was incorrectly opened, but after some modifications (on Linux the way SerialPortExtendedSessionUnix sets attributes is wrong), and although the openAttributes was set correctly (O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK|O_NOCTTY), the same problem holds. Another question : in which extent could I use XtermEmulator and VT102Emulator to talk with /dev/pst/1 ? For instance, I would like to display colored characters on the console and so one, but don't know how to tackle this issue ! Thanks ! [TEAM] V3.9 Team progress report

Here's a progress report on what the Version 3.9 Team has been up to recently. We've been involed in an active discussion on the Packages team mailing list about a partitioning of the 3.8 image into packages, using the Impara iSqueak approach discussed briefly on squeak-dev. This will have a huge impact on how the 3.9 release proceeds, of course, so most other 3.9 activities are on hold until this is resolved. To read the discussion, see: http://discuss.squeakfoundation.org/cgi-bin/ezmlm-cgi?10 It looks like we will probably proceed with some variant of this plan for 3.9alpha. This will basically mean that the Squeak 3.9alpha image will no longer be updated via an update stream comprised purely of traditional changesets, which contain primarily code changes and the occasional do-it. All of the code in the image would be assigned to a set of Monticello packages. "Loading updates" in a 3.9alpha image would instead typically merely update to the latest version of each package in the release repository. However, on occasion if a do-it is needed to load code in a certain order or massage instances in the image, those would still be done via the update stream, along with a "config map" specifying a certain set of packages to load. See the iSqueak thread on squeak-dev and on the Packages mailing list for more details. So, we are trying to proceed with this. At this point the next step is to set up the "3.9 Release" Monticello repository, which will probably be the SqueakSource repository at Berne. This is currently waiting on a new server. Note that doing this almost certainly means that 3.9alpha will be "starting over" from 3.8 final. There is an existing 3.9alpha update stream with some enhancements in it (although not that many), but this will likely be abandoned. This is for a few reasons: 1. The initial iSqueak package partitioning was done with a 3.8 final image, we'd like to use this as a starting point and not have to try to re-do the partitioning in the existing 3.9alpha image. 2. The final AbstractString cleanup was only done in 3.8 final, not in 3.9alpha, and we'd rather not have to re-do that either. 3. There have been some concerns about the UI performance with the Smallland changes made in the 3.9alpha stream. Since these haven't been addressed, there is some preference for reverting these changes. If we abandon the previous 3.9alpha stream, it will probably be renamed to something like "3.9alphaold" in the master updates.list file, so that the history is still there, but it's no longer active. We'll then start over with a new "3.9alpha" stream, which can be updated to from 3.8final with a do-it. There are some other enhancements in the old 3.9alpha stream which we don't want to lose... we'll need to back-port those into the new package-ized 3.9alpha stream. Of course, we want to get all of this going fairly soon, as harvesting for 3.9 is pretty much at a stand-still until the new 3.9 process is started. (Harvesting can still proceed for the 3.8.x series of releases, though.) On a side note, once we get this going, we may want to create a Harvesting team with its own team leader. The Janitors team and the V3.9 team are both important, but they don't really cover everything in the harvesting process. Or, the Janitors team could also take on some harvesting duties. There is also a swiki page for V3.9 at http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/5645 , which lists some of the potential large content items for 3.9, once we get the above process working. The timing for the final release will probably be 5-6 months from the time the new process is working, unless something else comes up, such as coordination with some other release. - Doug

[TEAM] ToolBuilder Update

Greetings all, At this point, I think it makes sense for someone from the 3.9 integration team to contact me about, well, integrating the changes we have made :-). The only thing I'm aware of that is still outstanding is to create a compatible Custom menu construction interface.... Unfortunately, there are many, many ways to create menus. I would like this to be one unified interface, and once this is done, this task is basically complete. From our list, Andreas has said: <quote> BTW, from my point of view I consider the work that needed to be done pretty much finished. The interfaces are there, they work, they can be used by anyone who is interested and the only thing we're missing is the integration with UIManager. </quote> We are moving the discussion of any further ToolBuilder work to squeak-dev, as it is now about integration with the core of squeak. When to redraw a window

Hi, I am trying to draw Indic text onto a Squeak's subwindow from an external DLL using FFI. How do I know that it is time to REdraw the text. Such as when an overlapping window goes away or the window is unminimized. Is there some event I can respond to. Since drawing is done externally I think I must also be able to respond to unminimization of the main Squeak window. etc. Thank You, ++imanshu.
