I'm trying to save a jpeg file on my disc. I tried a lot of different classes but could not get something worki ng. Then after losing 30 min. Graphical modeling notation...

Fellow Squeakers... I'm currently building an object model for a banking domain that has 5 parallel projects utilizing it (you know the kind...100+ people, etc.). I have grown this model over the past year using true object-oriented design principles ("true OO" being defined by Alan Kay as messaging, encapsulation, and extreme late binding). Even though this is a huge I/T group (2000+) and they require models in UML, I've used Squeak as my modeling language. I have major parts of the model running in Squeak complete with Traits-like pluggable behaviors and SUnit tests. But now the challenge...they want diagrams. Futhermore, they want them in UML. For those that have ever dove deep into UML you know it does not support true messaging or late binding. A message in UML is a function invocation. This sequence diagrams have enough trouble handling superclass/subclass behaviors, and pluggable traits are almost impossible to show accurately. Does anyone know of a graphical modeling notation that supports a truly object-oriented model? Or is Smalltalk a new calculus, as Alan Kay suggests, and therefore it remains textual? When I explain to people that the true power lies between the objects, ie, the messaging, they want me to to draw them a picture. Thanks, Mark Mayfield

[BUG][FIX] TextMorph focus handling

"Change Set: FixTextFocus Date: 18 June 2005 Author: Andreas Raab This change set fixes text morph focus handling. When lazily (re)creating the text morph's paragraph we need to know whether the text morph holds the keyboard focus but this information can be hard to retrieve - it outright fails for example, when we are in a project transition. This change set simply makes it so that text morphs explicitly remember whether they hold the focus or not."

Help! Saving a dead image

My image seems to have gotten fried after a system crash. When I restart the interpreter, the main window doesn't come up after selecting the image. But my .changes seem in good shape, and there hasn't been a lot of work (maybe 5 or 6 days of hacking) from the release image. Is there any easy way (or least painful way) to reconstruct an image from the release version, or at least recover my code, without manually mucking around in the .changes to create a fileIn?

I am not a lawyer. The following is just some rambling ideas, posted for fun. However, I see no practical advantage to keeping copyright and releasing it under an open-source license. Even the fabulously free MIT/X license has one string: you have to include the copyright notice if you make copies. Is this one string desirable enough to make it worth using a license instead of going public domain? If you use MIT/X (or GPL or any other license) you give up a big advantage of public domain: it's rock-solid established law that is codified internationally by the Berne convention. I don't know why it is claimed that GPL and BSD are interoperable. You cannot link code together that was written under these licenses, correct? You can (*with limits*) have them talk over sockets, but that is true for just about any pair of open source licenses. Usually when people say that licenses are interoperable, it means that you can take code from one program and copy-paste it into the other. That is not the case with GPL and any non-GPL license. This is why Mozilla is now released under both Mozilla-L and GPL; you can take the GPL option if you want to intermix Mozilla code with GPL code. Thanks for pointing out, Jim, that FSF does litigate over the code it holds. Obviously they have are in a different boat than me. They are actually putting teeth into the licenses they provide. This strategy of reducing the number of licenses is interesting, but it seems better to phrase it as making a few good licenses very popular instead of reducing the number of licenses around. For starters, reducing the number of licenses is impractical past a certain point. There is already a vast amount of GPL code and BSD code (and Mozilla code and Artistic License code and ...), and that code is never going to disappear. Further, there will always be indivual programmers that want to do their own thing. But maybe it's not even desirable. To wax philosophical a moment, I confess it sends a tendril of fear through me to even contemplate central planning of large populations, and here we are discussing central planning for every open-source programmer on the planet. That aside, I am not sure there is anything that can be profitably done other than spread information about which licenses are already popular and about what is known about different licesnes. No programmer wants their code to be inaccessible (and heck, if they do, it's their right!). Just spread the information, and most programmers should naturally drift towards using a few popular licenses. Let programmers be free, and they will surprise us with the great things they do. Okay, so here's my plan, in my fantasy open-source advocacy group (some people have fantasy football teams, others, well, are complete nerds): 1. Pick one approach or a few approaches to open-sourcing, develop it, and try to make it popular. This requires a lot of legal work, especially if you start thinking about a world-wide effort instead of an effort in one country. I'm intentionally vague on the details; maybe this means developing an uber-license that will be valid everywhere, or maybe it simply means heralding the wonders of public domain. 2a. Work on other legal issues. For example, Andrew and Jimmie discuss how you know that some software you are looking at is *truly* licensed under GPL or whatever. I bet most open-source projects are not careful about this sort of thing and thus have a legal time bomb. 2b. As another example, what about right-of-author countries? The spirit of open source is that you give your code over to the project (even though you might retain copyright as a technical matter), but in a right-of-author country you cannot give away certain rights. Does this matter? How should it be handled? 2c. And what about countries where licenses are contracts, and where valid contracts need to meet all kinds of restrictions? This example, to me, seems like a strong argument in favor of using public domain. It seems rather difficult to roll a license that will be valid in *all* the major jurisdictions of the world, but if you try then you have to consider countries like these.... 3. Maybe, try to hook up with law-makers and get the legal systems to treat open-source content on a par with public domain. For example, maybe there should be some sort of legal status, analagous to public domain, for works that are free and that have contributions from the general public. They would sort of be "owned by the public". This is very close to public domain, but one possible difference would be that "contribution" is recognized by the system and treated specially. If you contribute to an open-source project, then it would be nice if you don't need to do anything special to provide a license or transfer copyright. Further, contribution might be treated as extending the work; AFAIK, copyright law currently talks about works and derivatives of works, but does not talk about a living work that grows over time. But again, just posting some ideas. I'm only a spectator enjoying these exciting times as these issues are worked out. Lex Spoon

Virtual console (tty & pst) and Extended Serial Port

Hi, I'm playing a bit with the ability of Squeak to talk with /dev/tty and /dev/pts/x, and encountered some problems with ExtendedSerialPort. I first used the classic SerialPort, and with some modification in the sqUnixSerial.c ( /* portNum 0=/dev/ttyS0, etc. */ /* include 1 byte for NUL at end */ #define PORT_NAME_SIZE 11 static const char serialPortBaseName[] = "/dev/pts/0"; /* #define PORT_NAME_SIZE 10 static const char serialPortBaseName[] = "/dev/tty2"; */), it is possible to write and read without problems on the virtual console. With SerialPortExtended, writing is not a problem, modulo some modifications attached with this mail. I modified eagain, oonblock, etc... Maybe should we create a new class SerialPortExtendedSessionLinux because I found for instance a different value for eagain (11) in the linux system than the original one (32 for BSD one I guess)... Probably Linux/GNU system is not unix :-) Oh yes, comments are welcome on this piece of code ! Because ExtendedSerialPort seems to have been created with modem communication in mind, and I've had to do some weird things (see in the attached file, in primOpenPort:..., (targetFileName value includesSubString: 'ttyS') - set speed of a virtual console gives an error) Anyway, when I try to read characters, there is a problem : here is a trace after the function read of ExtendedSerialPortPlugin ( bytesRead = read(fd, array+startIndex-1, (size_t)count); fprintf (stderr, "after reading buffer number of bytesRead : %i\n", bytesRead ); fprintf (stderr, "errno : %i\n", errno ); ) after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 ... etc and when I hit some keys, nothing changes but when I hit return, suddenly : after reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 bafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 oafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 nafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 jafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 oafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 uafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 rafter reading buffer number of bytesRead : 1 errno : 0 it displays the keys and return to the loop : after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 after reading buffer number of bytesRead : -1 errno : 11 ... The behaviour is different with SerialPort, in fact, it is as expected : bytesRead = 0 when I hit nothing, and 1 when a key is pressed. My first guess was that the file was incorrectly opened, but after some modifications (on Linux the way SerialPortExtendedSessionUnix sets attributes is wrong), and although the openAttributes was set correctly (O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK|O_NOCTTY), the same problem holds. Another question : in which extent could I use XtermEmulator and VT102Emulator to talk with /dev/pst/1 ? For instance, I would like to display colored characters on the console and so one, but don't know how to tackle this issue ! Thanks ! question about file flushing

If I am writing to multiple FileStreams, sending #flush to any one of them only flushes the contents of just that one file or all open files on that same hard-drive? Does anyone know for sure? thanks, Chris
