Great! :) Sounds good, especially FAT32, acces to sources and snapshotting will ease development a lot. :) Unfortunately, I have to report it failed to boot in Qemu-0.13 on windows XP (vmware plaer seems to work better a bit). Just now I can't test it on Dell or on linux, I'll be able at saturday or sunday. [ANN] SqueakNOS update released!

For all those who may be intrested, we are glad to announce that we have just uploaded an updated version of SqueakNOS to our site. You can find the updated download links here <http://squeaknos.blogspot.com/p/download.html>. This release adds the following items to the previous version: (99.9% modeled with objects) - Improved support for ATA devices access - Implementation of a model of files and directories - Implementation of FAT32 filesystem - Support for reading sources from the hard disk - Support for X86 paging setup and handling of page faults - Implementation of a model of free and used memory - Implementation of image snapshotting (based on the paging mechanism) - Based on Pharo, but also supporting Squeak and Cuis - Added some primitives for communicating between VM and image - Support for Alien and FFI - Added basic support for writing to serial via VM so that it's possiblo to out debug info to the outside world. - Added pretty basic ATA benchmarks - Added some scripts to automatize work done from the outside world - Many code cleanups Future directions are: - Support for Cog VM - Investigate replacing SqueakNOS plugin with NativeBoost so that we do more on the image - Offloading memory pages to disk - More tests - Benchmarks For the brave ones, remember that you can always generate a SqueakNOS image by using the ConfigurationOfSqueakNOS (which is a bit outdated now), or by manually loading the packages from monticello. SqueakNOS on Dell Optiplex

Hello, I'd like to report I succesfully ran SqueakNOS (SqueakNOS-19-feb-2010.tar.bz2 from sourceforge - a bootable CD) on DELL Optiplex GX270 (2.4GHz Intel P4, 1 GiB RAM, integrated Intel 82865G Graphics card). With PS2 keyboard and USB DELL mouse (working except of the wheel), graphics is working up to 1600x1200x32. Cheers, Petr Dvorak

Building SqueakNOS on Ubuntu

Hello, I am trying to build SqueakNOS on Ubuntu 10.10, using the sources from SqueakNOS-19-feb-2010.tar.bz2 from SourceForge. It gets as far as the final link step but then fails because of an undefined reference to __longjmp_chk. SqueakNOS can be compiled in Ubuntu 10.10 now

Hi, I made a minimal change to the Makefile so that SqueakNOS successfully compiles in Ubuntu 10.10 (thank's Johnathon Meichtry for the trick). So now compiling is a bit easier. "Hallo", dear Squeak Purists! As I am new to this list I introduce myself shortly. As startup entrepreneur I don't (resp. can't) deal with Smalltalk systems, unfortunately. Currently I head costum solutions for consulting professionals, mostly for the (at least objective-c driven) Mac platform. Though, I hope to combine one day my long lasting enthusiasm for "the only one", a fully object-oriented, self-contained, dynamic, open computing environment, with my business efforts. Concerning this, the SqueakNOS platform seems to me the most promising approach towards a next generation platform. I want to say at this point: thank you very much for your terrific work! I understand it is a work in progress with a bulk of challenges yet to face. I'm sorry for not being able to deliver code by myself, as I am not nearly as much into it like you guys, but I hope there will be a chance for contribution. Right now, I want to get my team members get a feeling for this platform and share my excitement about this technique, so they maybe will get onboard too... constructing the future of computing... ;) That's it, what leads me straight to my question today: I like to build a custom image for SqueakNOS (for demo purposes). Unfortunately, both "tutorials" I found didn't work out (http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeaknos/2008-September/000101… and http://web.archive.org/web/20080215000403/people.squeakfoundation.org/artic…). Possibly it's very dumb question, but: how do I get a bootable SqueakNOS disk image with my own "NOSified" .image and .change files. (I loaded the respective MC-package into the image, but further trials led to an error message, before even GRUB was loading.... Poor skills...) I would like to get a new (costumized) Squeak4.1 version image running. So how do I accomplish this? One last question: Am I right, that getting the graphics resolution above simple XGA is a major act beyond some GRUB config? Or is there a easy (or maybe a "dirty", demo-purpose-only) way without coding full video card supply? Thank you very much for your patience, best regards Michael

Failed to load to SqueakNOS...

Thanks Gerardo for your answer. It was a reason I tried to boot into SqueakNOS just now. Unfortunately, I failed. First, I dounloaded two files, SqueakNOS-8-Mar-2010-Disk.7z and SqueakNOS-19-feb-2010.tar.bz2 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/squeaknos/files/. I beleive first is VMware virtual computer copy, so I put it aside. Second is ISO image (and vmx file, I expect for VMware diskless CD-bootable virtual computer). I used UNetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to make a bootable SD-card for my eeepc-900 from those ISO. Then I restarted my laptop with SD card installed, changed BIOS settings to boot from SD Card, and I got into GRUB menu with several lines in it for different resolutions. Unfortunately, process not goes further :) For any menu entry I it reports something like "Missing or corrupted kernel". I failed to switch myself into command-line mode. Pressing "c" do nothing, "ctrl+c" and "esc" switch me to "boot:" prompt, which asking me for kernel name, not commands. Manual "SqueakNOS.kernel" and "/SqueakNOS.kernel" typing do not helps. Pressing "tab" (for autocomplition) lists several entries like "unetbootindefault", "ubnentry0" and so on, but typing as kernel names calls error message, too. Maybe it's something wrong about UNetbootin ? I can see several additional files on the SD card if compared them to .iso: ldlinux.sys menu.c32 syslinux.cfg ubnfilel.txt ubnkern ubnpathl.txt I thought it's grub files, but I'm not sure anymore - maybe it's files of "normal" GRUB, not your modified version? For example, I do not understand if menu I saw goes from /boot/grub/menu.lst or from /syslinux.cfg ? They both have lines with SqueakNOS. I think it's second one, becouse I can see "Default" entry in /syslinux.cfg , and there are no this name in /boot/grub/menu.lst And I see this "Default" line during boot. I'll continue my experiments at home, where I have Ubuntu with grub command. But maybe you know whats going wrong?

It's wonderful to see your achievements was published at least. I was forget my memory stick, and Gerardo gives me his one, and I expected to get a copy via internet...but it takes longer than expected to see this results online. I wanted to make some investigations related to SD-card or flash memory stick access. I made direct low level hardware access to SD card one day, so maybe it may help. Can you give me some...well...thoughts relating this? Maybe I should I mention something not easy to see, what may be important and so on? Something to make start easier.

Good day. I was really inspired by SqueakNOS tutorial of Gerardo Richarte at esug-2009 conference. I wanted to hack around SD access, but I failed to get needed staff on conference - I forget my USB stick, so Gerardo gives me his one, and I booted my eeepc natively on squeakNOS. Now I visited sourceforge to load needed stuff and find out last submittion is one year old. What about publishing new stuff? Hi Jecel, Marik, Gera and all, I'm on this list but mostly silent because I dont have much time to contribute... I've been away from SqueakNOS (and Smalltalk) for the last 2 or 3 years. I looked at the SiliconSqueak web site, it is awesome. Is the Plurion board available? How do you develop for this? I didnt find quotes for LatticeECP2 development boards.
