We'd really have to see it to decide, but until we do, please, don't call it SqueakNOS or anything similar. On the other hand, if you implemented a new platform where SqueakNOS can run, it's just SqueakNOS, not 2.0, we commit it to the source repository, and that's it. And then, yes, we are planning a SqueakNOS 2.0 already (and a 3.0 and a 404 too :) gera

Hi, I used the SqueakNOS.iso version of 08-Aug-2006. I use VirtualBox 2.2.2 on Mac OS X 10.5 on a dual core macmini. I have mouse and keyboard control, but it is very jerky. It can take up to 20 seconds for any response to clicks or typing. Next I will try to test the network, but it expects different devices than SqueakNOS has, Any hints where to begin to test these drivers? And how to start modifying the current drivers? Merik

Out-of-date links and small rewrite

Some minor housekeeping would make the SqueakNOS pages much more friendly for the casual browser. 1. This URL: http://people.squeakfoundation.org/proj/SqueakNOS/ is now bad. Can someone suggest a replacement? Then I can update the Wiki which points to it, but not the squeaksource.com pages. 2. This URL: http://people.squeakfoundation.org/person/gera/ is also bad. Gera, any ideas? The Wiki points to this too. 3. On these pages: http://www.squeaksource.com/@GNJajakL4a4kH8PK/Hdr9024c http://www.squeaksource.com/SqueakNOS/ the links to the Squeak Wiki need to be changed (minnow.cc.gatech.edu became wiki.squeak.org). 4. On SqueakNOS's Wiki page, is the sentence "We've put up a mailing list to talk SqueakNOS, join in, or just drop an email there." really two sentences run together, or something else I misunderstood? The second sentence "Join in, or just drop an email there." is not true since you _can't_ post without subscribing. I'm happy to slightly rewrite the text unless someone has other ideas or objections. -- Derek

Porting and debugging SqueakNOS vs. other OSs

Hi everybody, Karl Romberg from squeak-dev mentioned SqueakNOS in response to my questions about Squeak on the bare metal and about self-virtualization. Has anyone here worked on SqueakNOS and the kernel of a more conventional OS? I'm curious whether SqueakNOS's structure makes it easier or harder to port than other OSs. From your description of USB problems I guess the lack of documentation and tools are problems for you, as they seem to be for other OSs. What about debugging SqueakNOS with VMware or something similar? Has any- one tried, and is SqueakNOS's architecture easier or harder to debug than other OSs? The VM interprets bytecodes, which creates one of the classic barriers to easy debugging, but perhaps the VM is also simpler than other OS kernels. Thanks, -- Derek

I upgraded to firmware q2e18 and squeakOS worked! So something on the OLPC wiki misled me as to whether q2e14 was the latest (that had been my version). First impression, the touchpad isn't as sensitive as it could be! Is there built in Squeak functionality for adjusting that?
