Interruption of service

Hi, This morning(/night), the machine on which the mailing lists where running broke stopped working. After trying to reboot the thing, I gave up and had the disk drive moved to another box - since then, I've been working to move services to other machines. The mailing list software now runs on our main mailserver in a new mail environment. My tests seem to indicate that everything works fine, but please bear with me if stuff goes wrong. Folks - Speaking as one who wants to see SqF take advantage of the community urge for a truly open Squeak, I have some concern for the pace of bringing SqF into existence. What I see is the Stable Squeak experiment reaching completion in not much more time than we have spent deliberating over the definition of SqF, and a number of people who *would support* an SqF looking elsewhere for it when it is right under their nose. Why? Because we haven't yet declared the existence of SqF. With no disrespect for the goals or even the process represented by the dialog on this list so far, what I'm wondering is: Why wait for all the chaordic process and exact definitions to declare the existence of SqF? Instead, why not Declare that SqF exists, Appoint a number of "acting" officers Declare a couple of active projects one of which is to converge on a more formal def of the organization I think I could even raise a few $$ to carry us through the interim period As token "Old Fart" I'm willing to be put in any role. I'll even appoint myself and everybody else if no one wants to do this. And I'll make up a project list (you can guess from prior messages). That doesn't sound very democratic ("open"), but I'm just wanting to "jump-start" the organization so that it can be accreting respect and definition while it is still being born, and so that we can channel the open Squeak urges into a coherent future, rather than fighting fires on the Squeak mail list and dissipating energy in twenty splinter efforts. What do others feel? - Dan PS: This may sound critical, but I don't feel that way at all. I'm happy with the current participants and process. I just feel the need for an interim solution.

Ok ok, I've finally signed up for the squeak foundation list :) I even read some of the recent backlog. I see M. Ducasse sounding the trumpets, so I presume my little noises won't be *too* out of place! My Biggest Question is what practical Squeak Foundation tasks are there at the moment that someone like myself without enormous amounts of spare energy can help with or take on? (I'd rather it be something Squeakily hands on rather than, oh, writing a charter, but I understand that all it takes for organization to go down the tubes is people of good will to stand by when the junk work threatens.) Is the harvesting process a Squeak Foundation Thing? I'm hoping that there's some tangible Squeak Development project for the foundation in the works to get our feet wet with. But I'm really not clear what the agenda is. Starting small I hope :) Cheers, Bijan Parsia.

For this reason I have done my tutorial: for giving to us a small and simple starting point. In my tutorial, I do not say nothing of new to all the old-squeakers... and perhaps nothing of new to good Java programmers about O. O. See: http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/377 So, there are some tutorials out there, although some are better than others. And of course more tutorials would be helpful. We should keep this list up to date, though. I already added Giorgi's tutorial to this list on the Swiki. Also, any tutorial on Squeak should mention which version of Squeak the tutorial works with. - Doug Way dway(a)riskmetrics.com

About a Squeak Assistant

As promised ;) I have written down some ideas about a visual support for an integrated Squeak Tutorials. A simple idea is this. We can write tutorial using html and some "magic" urls, using the Scamper borwser for viewing the tutorial. The advantage is simple: you can re-use existing documentation and adding documentation in html is simpler than using xml docbook or sgml. I have tried to define a new special "Url" called a SqueakTutorialUrl. It looks like: squeak://openForMe/Celeste This url sends to Celeste the open method. This emulates the "open for me xxxx" link used under Apple and Windows online help. squeak://tutorialAction/TutorialName/action Do something of special using a TutorialName instance (for example: executing 'TutorialName newTutorial action'). Some extension: squeak://?SomethingThatCanGenerateDynamicContents squeak://loadTutorial/Tutorial.zip Unzip and load the Tutorial.zip. Tutorial.zip contains some html pages (Tutorial-1.html, etc) and a Tutorial.st code file. This url load Tutorial.st and then return Tutorial-1.html as contents. Tutorial.st defines the class TutorialName Then url like squeak://tutorialAction/TutorialName/action will work. Benefits: + It is simple (I had only to extend the absoluteFromText: method in the Url class). + It is simple to extend/embed: you can build a new tutorial, bringing with you a special TutorialClassCode.st file). +It is quiet efficient. +It can give us compatibility with current old style html tutorial. +You can embed the tutorial in a project or in the image with small efforts. But: +It is not secure (malicious code can be inserted). +Only Scamper/Squeak can handle these special urls. +Feature must me minimal and well thinked. What do you think? Ciao ciao Giovanni Giorgi

For example, I am planning a small reference manual for explaning how to build very simple GUI using Morphic, based on MVC model. I am working, but I can dedicate from two to four hours of my weeks to squeak... ciao ciao!

Some goals for a Squeak Foundation

Happy new year to all I started to dream about what could do a Squeak Foundation. Here are the lists of thoughts. I reduced them to the most important ones as the resources will be limited. - promote Squeak - CDs with all the platforms, - VM working on main system like Unix which is always lacking up to date ports, - easy install, web plugging - Basic tutorials for newcomers - Improving the documentation -> Tests and comments - Adding block closures - Supporting the process of this wondeful open source movement in terms of managing projects, improving enhancement collection and inclusion in the image (while I was writing this last point I immediatley thought that the complete concept was ***wrong***. Changes should be integrated in subsystems that may compose image A or image B and we should get rid of this monolithic concept at least for system management and decomposition). I think that the Foundation should act as a catalyst to bring together the energy available in some key projects. - Improving the code (modularising, shrinking the blob, refactoring the code adding tests) as you certainly know I think that the two last points is really high in my list of dream. Having a code that I can give to students to read without saying that experimenting lead to some extreme or flawed design and be able to help improving some parts of Squeak without having the impression that this is for nothing would be great. Stef PS: last but not the least. SF should have measurable goals to be able to evaluate if the goals are met or not and to have a feedback loop process to improve. Be 2002 the year of Squeak
