[Etoys] How to translate with context for Etoys

Hi All. Etoys have >4000 translatable phrases. Some phrases are used at multiple locations and some need to be translated differently for each occurrence. We have been discussing about the issue. Please see previous discussions started from http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/localization/2008-March/000742.html Apparently gettext has feature for such situation: context. The usecase would be: 1) When POT extractor (GetTextExporter2) hit message send of #translated/#translatedNoop (or additional selector) and write record to POT, decides its context appropriately and write "msgctxt" line with context information. 2) #translated (or additional method) decides context for the receiver string and look up translations with string and context. Note the context used to look up translation must be equal to the extracted one in POT by 1). Otherwise look up fail. Now our problem is how to decide context on POT export and on execution of #translated. A couple of solutions have been proposed: P1) To introduce #translatedInContext: (or like that) and manually specify context. May be standadizing of how to express context would be needed. KDE folks have the syntax for this objective. Markus Schlager proposed how to express context for strings in user interface. (I will forward his proposal in another mail) P2) Not to introduce additional method for translation; name of method where #translate sent is automatically extracted as msgctxt. #translated uses name of method where receiver string placed as context to translate. Both proposals work for trivial case like 'literal' #translated But context for receiver of #translatedNoop also need to be decided and it is difficult. Actually native GNU gettext doesn't have variant of gettext_noop with that context can be specified, and we need to "invent" our own one. I am stuck here. Any idea will be really appreciated. ---- Pro of P2) : Implementation effort from developer would be minimum because one unfiied rule to decide context will be applied. Con: there are several important cases that the rule can't be applied. ** Example1 ** Every morph class have #descriptionForPartsBin that returns name and baloon help for the morph in parts bin as untranslated. Actual translation is executed in #translatedQuads and locations are very different. In this case, P2) can't be applied. P1) seems natural to me: each string itself to translate have its context (#translatedNoop returns such string), and #translate can ask the string about its context. ** Example2 ** please review #initializeStandardVocabulary: there are bunch of literals with #translatedNoop. The translation of these literals is executed in so many places that one can't track. /Korakurider

Hi, Antonio, Thanks for this report... We'd really like to get this fixed, but I'm having some difficulty reproducing the problem, so perhaps you could provide a little more information... a. The ScriptingTileHolder is a wrapper that is only placed around tiles which are dropped on the "desktop" rather than being inside a script. So please clarify what you mean in step 1. If you obtain anything from the GoldBox, it's going to be a real tile, not a ScriptingTileHolder. There can never be any ScriptingTileHolder inside a script. b. If you *do* have a ScriptingTileHolder (dark green border around some other tiles) on the desktop, you cannot do any manipulation within its contents -- all you can do is "pick it up" and drop it somewhere; if you drop it anywhere within an actual script, the tiles being held by the ScriptingTileHolder get deposited into the script, and the ScriptingTileHolder itself, its work done, vanishes. Since no modifications are ever allowed to a tile that is currently "wrapped" within a ScriptingTileHolder, it's not clear what you mean in "2.- Include there some orders.". c. Regarding your step 3 -- Are you really creating a copy of the STH -- i.e., do you really have a STH on the desktop, with dark green border, on which you bring up a halo and then duplicate it with the green handle? Or are you perhaps using successive halo-clicks on some tile *inside* a Scriptor to try to get a halo around some actual tile (and if so, where did the idea that it was a ScriptingTileHolder come from?) In trying to track down the problem you describe, I did once actually see a "transparent Alignment object" that satisfies your description, so I have little doubt that a real issue exists -- I just can't seem to isolate it, so perhaps you could help! [Etoys] update server for Squeakland-OLPC

Hi, I don't have an XO but use the Squeakland-OLPC etoys image on a Linux box. The update URL in this etoys image points to tinlizzie.org/updates/squeakland. Etoys bug fixes are going into tinlizzie.org/updates/etoys but not into updates/squeakland. Will the Etoys image for XO and non-XO hardware start diverging? Or is the plan to keep them the same? [Etoys] Small fonts in Etoys image

Hi, In Etoys (Squeakland-OLPC version) (TextStyle default fontArray at: 1) pointSize is set to 5 points. This font is used in many places including titles for Projects. I can hardly see anything at this size on a 1024x768 screen. Is this by design? Should I file a ticket in Etoys or Squeakland to get this fixed? TIA .. Subbu

I see that the Spanish eToys translation is at 61% Now, much Squeak work has been done in Spain. It might be a Fraggle Rock moment for me, or maybe there's a good reason it has not been done before, but I am curious, could the Squeak .es version be ported somehow? Yama

[Etoys] type clash in viewer slots

Hi, I had a viewer spec for #input category for a new Morph slot resolution 'Resolution in dots per inch' aNumber Player getResolution Player setResolution: This code worked fine in Squeakland image but failed in Etoys image. Etoys had another slot with the same name in VideoMorph so the type returned for my slot was incorrect - there was no warning of a clash. I had to change resolution to dpi to get the code to work. I thought a slot is a visual wrapper for a property. Why should its name be unique across classes? Is this a bug? Subbu
