[Etoys] suppressing auto phrase expansion in playfield

Hi, I am unable to suppress sprouting of scriptors around dropped phrase tiles in playfields by turning auto-phrase expansion option off. This used to work in the Squeakland images. Is this a bug or is it working as designed? This is in EToys 2.3#1896/non-XO. Subbu

[Etoys] etoys & Pootle (Re: Swedish translations for etoys)

Hi Korakurider, This is current work flow of etoys translation which I assume. - A developer modifies translation keywords. - New POT is updated in svn repository. - New POT is copied to git (mkPootle). - Pootle merges new POT automatically. - A translator translates new keywords introduced by new POT. - A translator checks fuzzy keywords modified by new POT. - A language admin commits translation. - POs are updated in git repository. - POs are copied to svn (mkPootle), and MOs are built (Makefile). [Etoys] Missing Strings for Localization?

Dear all! I kindly ask for some advice to bring the Etoy Translation forward. We have translated all available strings on the pootle server (currently we are testing and correcting the German Localization). When testing the resulting etoy.mo (from Pootle etoy.po without fuzzy) with an actual etoy- image (latest etoys-image-and-pr.zip downloaded from http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Etoys) I found that some strings are only in English available. No big surprise, it's an ongoing project. But there is also e.g. a missing string for an help baloon on the etoy start page which "every of the 120 million german user" will see (entry field for the name of the actual project). There are also several objects which have the main dialog items mixed in German and English eg event theatre, Menu item "make undraggable". Is there any advice on how to resolve the "most visible language mixups" in some dialogs. Is there something I should have checked before sending these message? Maybe I have missed something and just didn't get these strings into my system? When and how will more Strings become available for translation? Shall we proceed further with the translation or wait for a major update. Thank you for your understanding. best regards Gerhard Steiner

[Etoys] A new experimental version of OLPC image for non-XO environments

Hello, While ago, we made an experimental version of Etoys image based on the OLPC code base but for non-XO environments. We made another iteration of it and upload it to: http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/OLPC-Etoys080211.zip The image is based on the latest Etoys image, the suggestions from Subbu about fonts and README wordings are incorporated, and OggPlugin is included. We may still change the initial screen (what do you think if we should start with a screen with clouds or a blank screen?) but the code should be almost in good shape. Hopefully, this will be the basis for the new version of Squeakland. For non-English version, the translation need to catch up as we have been changing code in the image, but we can't wait for translations too long. The current plan is that the packages for other languages are made gradually, and in one way or another (replace the file on the squeakland.org or make a web server dedicated for different language community and put the package for it on the server) they will be accessible to the user. -- Yoshiki

[Etoys] Revised Etoys V3 files (The New Etoys image)

Hello, We released the new Etoys V3 development files about a week ago, but there was a big screw-up on my side. The EtoysV3.sources was corrupted, and also the image was inconsistent with the update stream. There was some discussion how to mitigate the situation internally, and we concluded that we release the revised files under the same name. Sorry for the confusion that is caused by making these revisions. Thank you! -- Yoshiki It could have been easily spotted by a simple test. Very embarassing kind of mistake, I have to say. BTW, there are some interesting issues I found during the process. A test like the following collects all methods whose recompiled result doesn't match with the current version: ----------------- | meth newMeth name | col _ OrderedCollection new. (sel ~= #cacheTempNames: and: [sel ~= #setTempNamesIfCached:]) ifTrue: [ meth = newMeth ifFalse: [col add: name]]]]]]]. ----------------- We indeed have several of these methods. One group of them has to do with automatically generated quick methods (by Kedama). The difference is only the trailer bytes so the behavior of them are not affected and can be corrected by recompiling. (One can argue that automatically generated methods shouldn't be in the .sources file, though.) The second group is left-over from a compiler change about literal arrays. Squeak used to compile an expression: #(nil 'void*') to an array with #nil and #'void*'. There was a change (with some opposition) to compile it to an array with nil (UndefinedObject) and #'void*'. However, some compiled method that were compiled by the old compiler stayed. ExternalStructures have these. While we are not using them, it would be nice to fix them at one point. The third group (only one method in it) has to do with character encodings. The method text of Character class>>initializeClassificationTable is almost correct, but the actual compiled method is compiled with old scheme of character encodings. The method contains some pairs of characters but some of them were dubious even before 3.8. The conversion got it almost right, but there is a pair (a character that looks like 'CE' and another that looks like 'ce') that got messed up. We should push an update to fix it.

[Etoys] The New Etoys image

Hello, The Etoys team made a new version of the Etoys image. This time, we decided: * to bump the major version number from 2 to 3. * to make a new .sources file called EtoysV3.sources, and * create a new update stream called "etoys3.0". Because of the Squeak's source code management limitation, the method change history needed to be discarded, and migrating from etoys 2.3 to etoys 3.0 is not automatic. To keep up with the new head of the update stream, you have to do the following. * Download http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/EtoysV3.sources and copy it to the directory where the VM resides or your image resides. (Search SqueakV3.sources on your disk and place EtoysV3.sources right next to it.) * Download http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/etoys-dev-3.0.zip and extract the files to your working directory. * If you are working in an 2.3 image, migrate your code and objects somehow to the new image. (If you know what you are doing, you could evaluate: SystemVersion newVersion: 'etoys3.0' in your 2.3-based image and fetch new changes for 3.0. But doing so is discouraged.) For the OLPC project, the etoys2.3 stream *should* be "final". As long as the Update.1 deadline doesn't force us, we are not going to push any new changes to etoys2.3. New changes will be pushed to the etoys3.0 update stream. Please fetch updates now and then to your 3.0-based image. -- Yoshiki (for the Etoys team)

[Etoys] Rotation center of a line (polygon)

Hi, Or a polygon... Usually when you change the geometry of a polygon Squeak calculates again the rotation center point. The problem happen when you change this point manually (drag it with Alt kay pressed on linux). Then it seem that the recalculate process is broken, the center takes fool values, yellow button from Halo produces curious effects etc. Regards

[Etoys] Greek and other languages support

We have started to translate the projects loaded on the XO for the Uruguayan deployment. We have found that, when we try to put an acute (like í) editing the text from the visor, they just don't work: On the textbox, it appears as a square, and in the workspace as a space. The problem happens in the moment you press the acute key (it doesn't wait until you press the next key). The keyboard is set up as LANG="es_AR.UTF-8", XKB_LAYOUT="es" Any suggestions? -- Regards, Pablo Flores
