[Etoys] Nepalese support: making progress

Hello, We are making another progress on the text rendering support with Pango. This time, I'm even comfortable to mention it publicly! As a test, I put a little bit of (incomplete) Nepalese support. For those who would like to try right now, do it a bit hard way on Linux: - Get the latest VMMaker image, update RomePlugin to the latest version with the Monticello browser. Generate source code to compile the VM. - Update the etoys-3.0 image to the latest. - Switch the language to Nepali from the flag in the menu bar. - Change the keyboard layout to devanagaari by something like: setxkbmap -layout in -variant deva and type Devanagaari into Etoys. Clipboard isn't quite right (even though it may seem to be working), but let me know if the keyboard works as expected. Sometime this week, we'll release the VM so that you don't have to build the VM by yourself. Thank you! -- Yoshiki

[Etoys] Tiles for changePixelsOfColor:toColor

Hi, [ I'm a novice at Squeak and Etoys, so please forgive me if I get some terminology wrong. I hope my basic question will be clear. ] My basic question is about how to create new tiles for the Viewer. Specifically, I'm interested in having some tiles in the Viewer to allow scripts to use changePixelsOfColor:toColor, because I think that that would allow for visualization of internal state of a morph without having to create one costume for every state. (The use of setGraphic: is reasonable for two-state systems, and a bit tedious for more complex ones, I think). I also am hoping in the process to learn more about how to implement custom viewer tiles and how the system hangs together. So far, in my attempts to make these tiles appear and work, I've found the additionsToViewerCategory* classes and wordingForOperator: selector, and added relevant clauses there. I've also found the colorComponentPhraseFor: selector, and worried that there are more dragons here than I might be able to cope with. I'd very much appreciate pointers on how to get started this kind of development, or a recipe for performing this kind of extension, or just telling me that it's way too hard and that I shouldn't even bother trying. Sorry. Thank you for reporting. But, it is hard to tell what is going wrong. I do have an XO with spanish keyboard, and I installed relatively new image and VM from the repository. (Because I just did, I played with the very latest: http://etoys.laptop.org/rpms/etoys-3.0.2029-1.noarch.rpm http://etoys.laptop.org/rpms/squeak-vm-3.10-3olpc3.i386.rpm ) and to me, on that XO with spanish keyboard, typing accented characters works. And on Fedora switching the keyboard layout and language setting and typing also works. Can you check the versions of them, locale setting, and keyboard layout? -- Yoshiki

The 9th Libre Software Meeting will be held at Mont de Marsan, Landes, in SW France, from the 1 to the 5 of July. LSM is an international free software event taking place in Jully, each year, in a town of France. The first event took place in 2000 at Bordeaux. [Etoys] {waveplace} new Etoys courseware; new pilots in Florida and Nicaragua

Hi everyone, Waveplace has finished its beta "Squeaky Tales" courseware ... 30 lessons (with videos) that teach how to teach Etoys on the XO. To see examples, or to become a beta tester, visit: http://waveplace.com/resources/tutorials/ We took everything we learned in our first pilot (in the Virgin Islands) and started completely over. The pacing is much better, as is the storytelling component, which was crucial in St John. We're using the beta courseware in our three pilots this summer, and will then start completely over and make a physical textbook and DVD series (in English, Spanish, and French). All will be sold at cost for physical materials. (We're a non-profit.) In other news, we held our first intensive teacher workshop last week in Immokalee, Florida. The teachers are very enthusiastic. For the next two months, they'll be using the courseware to teach 42 children, each of whom received their very own XO last week. Larry Abramson from NPR spent a day with us, listening as we taught the teachers and later the children. Lastly, we've just finished prep work for our 4th pilot ... this time on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua in a school that currently has no electricity. If all goes well, we'll be starting that pilot in mid- July. When this pilot finishs, Waveplace will have given both XOs and training to more than 100 children and 20 teachers. [Etoys] GStreamer testing

So I sent an inquiry to the OLPC developer's list, asking which media formats were supported out-of-the box on the XO. No answer. But I found this table on the interwebs: Media format Required package(s) Audio OggVorbis gstreamer-plugins-base WAV, AU gstreamer-plugins-good MP3 gstreamer-plugins-ugly aac/aac+ gstreamer-plugins-bad AC3 gstreamer-ffmpeg WMA gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-ugly Video OggTheora gstreamer-plugins-base H.263 gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-good motionJPEG gstreamer-plugins-good MPEG1/2 gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-ugly MPEG4 gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-ugly WMV gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-ugly Splitter 3GP/MP4 gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-good AVI gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-good ASF gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-ugly MPEG2 gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-ugly OLPC ships only the "base" and "good" plugins. That means only Ogg is fully supported, with ogg-vorbis for audio (music), ogg-speex (for speech) and ogg-theora for video. Also, WAV and AU should work. If someone installs "ffmpeg" and the "ugly" plugins (ugly license- wise), a lot more formats become available, including MP3, AC3, WMA for audio, MPEG and WMV for video, and depending on the codecs used also some kinds of MP4, AVI, or ASF. To install these on an XO, first do sudo rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna which will install an unofficial Fedora 7 yum repository, and then sudo yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg (this page was helpful to find this out: http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f7.html) We should definitely test with the various ogg formats, but with some of the additional ones, too, as this was one of the points to go with GStreamer. [Etoys] Possible bug with etoy tile variables

When I create a script with a variable assignment I can't replace the variable tile with another. To reproduce make two variables for a morph. Make a assignment script for one of them. Pull out the name part of the second variable and try to drop it on the name part of the one in the script. This bug makes it hard to refactor scripts and experiment, because you have to recreate the whole tile row to change just the assignment. Karl
