[Etoys] "player's" becomes "nil's"; value types

Hi all, I encountered the following phenomenon, which IMO is quite irritating. It's about "player"-Tiles in scripts with a parameter (screenshots attached). I made an empty script with a player-typed parameter an added a basic method and varaiable-assignment (EllipseTalkTo1.png): Ellipse>>talkto: player Ellipse forward:5 Ellipse's heading :=0 Then I drag player-tiles off the parameter-area to replace the Ellipse-tiles (EllipseTalkTo2.png): Now it looks like Ellipse>>talkto: player Player forward:5 nil's heading :=0 It _should_ look like Ellipse>>talkto: player player forward:5 player's heading :=0 Then I change the parameter-type to sth. different and back (EllipseTalkTo3.png, EllipseTalkTo4.png): "Player" and "nil" become "dot": Ellipse>>talkto: player dot forward:5 dot heading :=0 The _should_ be: Ellipse>>talkto: player dot forward:5 dot's heading :=0 I repeat step two an drag 'player'-tiles to replace the 'dot'-tiles. Now it looks like (EllipseTalkTo5.png) Ellipse>>talkto: player Player forward:5 Player heading :=0 It _should_ look like Ellipse>>talkto: player player forward:5 player's heading :=0 So there are three problems: - Should "player" be capitalized everywhere or nowhere? - Why does "player's" become "nil's" at the beginning? - Why is "'s" missing from the moment at which "dot" appears? And finally I have a request from the point of localization: All value-types of variables or parameters should get marked translatable. At the moment this is true for 'Color' and 'Sound' only. CALL FOR PAPERS ** Deadline Extended** - NOW OCTOBER 14, 2008 The Seventh International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5 2009) January 19-22, 2009, Kyoto, Japan http://www.cm.is.ritsumei.ac.jp/c5-09/ Sponsored by Kyoto University Global COE (Centers of Excellence) Program: Informatics Education and Research Center for Knowledge-Circulating Society Viewpoints Research Institute European Smalltalk User Group Hewlett-Packard SCOPE Computers, networks, and other forms of technology are now pervasive in our information-based society. However, most users still function as passive consumers of technology. To evolve into a true knowledge society, it is critical that we transform computer-based human activities to engage users in the active process of creating, connecting, and collaborating together. The C5 conference is for researchers, technology developers, educators, and technology users who are concerned about developing and enabling human-oriented creation, connection, and collaboration processes. C5 is an international forum for presenting ongoing work as well as new work currently under development and for discussing future needs and directions in creative computing and multimedia authoring environments. We welcome equally the submission of technical papers and practitioner/experience reports for paper presentations. In addition, we have added workshops to the conference and are now soliciting proposals fro interactive workshops. Hosted in Japan, this conference builds on the successes and high standards held by previous C5 conferences: 2003-2005, 2007 in Kyoto (Japan), 2006 in Berkeley (USA), 2008 in Poitiers (France). TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Development and applications of collaboration tools and environments - User collaboration using 3D, multimedia, and animation objects - Technologies for creating educational environments - Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) and Technology- Enabled Learning (TEL) - Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), distributed work, and virtual teaming - Hybrid technology activities, such as scientific experiments, instrumentations, participatory design (PD) or simulations , robots, and game playing - Development of applications/content for non-traditional learning and support environments, including mentoring, role-playing, peer-to-peer, "teacherless" environments, low-cost and sustainable technologies (e.g. $100 laptop), and gerontechnology applications, among others. - Applications and tools for education from K-12 through higher education, system design by children, digital library and search environment for children Conference sessions will include invited talks, including one from Dr. Alan Kay (Viewpoints Research Institute), 2003 ACM Turing awards, one from Dr. Allison Druin, Human-Computer Interaction Lab, University of Maryland as well as formal paper presentations, hands-on workshops, informal "un-conference" and "lightning" sessions and social and sightseeing events. PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES C5 2008 invites submissions of full papers in the following categories: - Theoretical papers - Case studies, experiments reports - 'Bringing theory into practice or practice into theory' papers focus on building a bridge between practices and theories in the fields of C5. Full papers must report original work that has not been previously published. Papers must present reports of significant work in research, development and applications with regards to one or more of the conference topics of interest. All submissions will be reviewed by a distinguished international program committee. A full paper with 8 page limit formatted in two columns and 10 point font should be submitted by the paper submission deadline. The papers are reviewed by the program comittee and authors will be notified about acceptance. Accepted authors have to submit a camera ready version of the full paper with 8 page limit by the camera-ready copy deadline. Accepted papers should be revised according to the review reports and the wording should be checked by a native English speaker. Papers should follow the formatting instructions provided by 8.5" x 11", Two-Column Format of "IEEE Computer Society Press - Proceedings Author Guidelines" (please refer to INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS in Conference Publishing Service). Submitted papers and camera-ready papers should be sent electronically through our online submission site (will be available soon). The PDF, Postscript and MS-WORD formats are acceptable. PUBLICATION OF THE PROCEEDINGS Preliminary version of the proceedings will be distributed during the conference. The formal version of the proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society and sent to authors after the conference. For each accepted paper, at least one of the authors needs to attend the conference and give the presentation, otherwise the paper will not be included in the formal proceedings. [Etoys] attempt for a faster drgeo.xo bundle

I have prepared a DrGeo bundle with its own image. It is definitely faster to start (1-2s vs 2 min) When I use it on my XO machine I have at the start a non fatal error about a missing primitive (related to DBus) My laptop does not use latest build, so it may just be a problem of my own. [Etoys] NOSifying etoys.image

Hi all (hi Hilaire :) I'm interested in making bootable (SqueakNOS) the standard etoys.image from the OLPC. The process of NOSifying a somehow modern .image is easy: Just load FFI from universe and then load SqueakNOS from Monticello: MCHttpRepository location: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/SqueakNOS' user: '' password: '' Save the image, and reboot with it (copy it to the root of the USB drive as SqueakNOS.image) I have tested this with several images, and it works. But with etoys.image it doesn't work. I've tested this on the OLPC and on a real PC and VMWare. In all the cases I've got the same result (if you are familiar with the image, which I guess): The car is moving around the screen, but the screen is not properly redrawn (it only get's redraw when the car passes over somewhere), and the keyboard and mouse don't work (that's my problem). I tried to nail down the problem, but couldn't so far. One of the problems I had to overcome is to load FFI into the image. Apparently the base .image used is too old for the versions of FFI I could find. I solved this using partial fileout-fileins, bit I'm not sure if I did it properly... I have many questions and possible future directions, but lets just start with the basics: What version of Squeak is etoys.image based on? What are the chances that I can get the same, but based on a newer image? If anybody is interested in giving me a hand here, I'll help you get started with SqueakNOS, and from there it'll be just Squeak as you are used to it. richie

Hello Morgan, Sadly I don't think DrGeoII as it is now should be included in the G1G1. Indeed there are two major problems right now: - slowness to start the DrGeoII activity. - worst, an issue was found lately in saving/loading DrGeo activities. Yet, there is a very simple and effective solution to fix these problems: make DrGeoII integrated in the Etoys image. Frankly this is the best, easier and more elegant solution for users and developpers. I cc this email to Etoys list, to see what do think the Etoys people about that solution. If it is an acceptable solution for Etoys people, I can prepare an udpated XO bundle. What do think Etoys people? [Etoys] eToys Ready in 8.2?

Hi All, I don't usually read this e-mail list but I do get them and scan the headlines. I need to pick the final version of eToys which we will include in the 8.2 G1G1. It looks like eToys v93 is the latest. Can you confirm that is the final one which you want included with the release? Let me know ASAP as I want to make a candidate build with the target final activity by tomorrow. Thanks, Greg S
