If this is the 64 bit machine then you probably have only installed the 64 bit version of libuuid.so.1. This sounds similar to an old ubuntu bug:

but they say it was fixed? In any case, the VM we bundle currently needs the 32 bit version of libuuid.so.1.
Possibly you can install it using
sudo apt-get install libuuid1:i386
(see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultiArch )

Well, the install failed, so no wonder nothing changed ;)
Are you connected to the internet? Why else would downloading the packages fail - the urls work for me.
