Hi, Stef.
Sugar cannot install your original verion because of its archive structure (all files must be under single root folder). I repackaged it (attached) and at least it is installed and run on my XO (Build650) ! Though there is room for improvement, this should be good start!
Cheers, /Korakurider
Thanks a lot!
However, I do not understand what was the problem. My structure is (before zipping it and remaning the file to .xo)
and when I dezipped your version it is the same. Am i doing something wrong?

Your .xo contained a "__MACOSX" folder next to the "BotsInc.activity" folder.

ok that guy! So I will upload the botsinc xo file that you sent me to the activity web site. :)

I would recommend you to test it by yourself before upload :-) I think it needs improvement as I wrote. For instances: There are files to add to MANIFEST. Fallback profile directory is still Epaati. Button on browser is crippled and difficult to read . I can't open menu for botsinc.
You as author will find more...
Anyway congrats! /Korakurider

I thought that etoy should change the fonts it uses. So I will fix that as much as I can.
I can't open menu for botsinc.
I will check on the etoy image Ok this is strange.

I can't open menu for botsinc.
I will check on the etoy image Ok this is strange.
The trick is that eToyFriendly is enabled in standard etoys.image, that makes menu disabled. My test shows that disabling the preference in postscript of the project makes difference. (For BotsInc as non etoys app, that friendliness is not needed anyway :-)

I do not know I changed my internet connection to be freely accessible (no pass) and I cannot browse the web from the xo. (Before I had a password but once I typed the password I could press enter since it was disabled)

Ok I see I will use the image that yoshiki sent around and see what I can do to get a menu or launch the application. Tx

You should really turn to the OLPC support forums - this is not an Etoys problem:
There are many problems with the XOs and even more solutions, but this is not the place to discuss them.

The image Yoshiki sent around is *not* as useful if you want to develop for OLPC. It is tuned to work nicely in non-XO systems, and will evolve into the next Squeakland version. You should at least work with the OLPC etoys.image, and ideally inside Sugar. It really can't be that hard to get the XO working - maybe you need to give it to a student ;)

ok thanks for the information. My main problem is total lack of time. I mean really absolute lack of time.

I imagine that this one is an olpc-etoy image
Just to report it, I could not open it with the squeak mac vm that is in the archive. Run well with the 3.8.15beta1U on my mac.

Yes, the exec permission for the mac vm is missing.

Hello,
This is way overdue, but I just upload potential version of Etoys image for non-XO environments:
http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/OLPC-Etoys071231.zip
There are known bugs, but so far we are thinking that the initial look will be along this line.
I tried it on Fedora Core Linux and Windows. On Mac it should work but there is a chance that the VM cannot find the right image and vice versa.
Please try it and let us know how it goes.

A happy new year!
thanks Can I imply that I can use this image to test the fine tuning of my xo bundle?

The code is identical; only difference is the preferences and settings. Perhaps you would want to do it with the etoys-dev image (http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/etoys-dev-2.3-1815.zip plus all subsequent updates) and package it.

Hi. I know this is experimental but,, Which translation engine will we use, gettext emulation or (historical) NaturalLanguageTranslator? How about QuickGuide?

If we make a pre-configured image for a language, pre-loading the data would be better. So, enabling the pre-loading somehow and use gettext emulation would be ideal?

Please review proposed enhancement to enable preloading. http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/5861
But I am not sure if it is really ideal. Progress of translations for OLPC EToys is behind codes and translation effort will be long tail. (We haven't yet had Pootle based ecosytem for translation though we expect it soon) And we can't use update stream any more to maintain gettext based translation dictionary in image. What's wrong with external MOs even for preconfigured settings?

The way I see non-XO image ("Squeakland-OLPC") is 6 months/12 months release cycle with virtually no update between releases. It synchronizes with Etoys for XO ("OLPC Etoys"), which presumably have the incremental, long tail nature of translation.
Still, it is true that external MO are ok in that setting. Adding a second or so to the start up time is not that terrible.

Hi, Subbu,

Thanks!

The launcher script for Linux users is in "etoys.sh". If the script is on a removable volume (like a USB flash memory), mount it with "exec" option or you will get a "Permission denied" error when launching the script.
I'll add this. Thank you.

Hmm, consistent with what? Or, you mean that BitstreamVera Sand 12pt?

The default text font was still set to the classic font (Atlanta?), so text in workspace, file list buttons, browser buttons etc. looked a bit jarring. BitstreamVera Sans 9pt blended right in.

Agreed. Both the default and the code font must be TrueType fonts.

Yoshiki,
I played with the image a bit; it looks good and same as OLPC overall, is there anything specific to try?
Apart from the bar being color , the only thing I noticed is this: When I click "Help" (the "?" in the top menu bar) a list shows up (named EToys Quick Guidec), but clicking on any of item (e.g. Object Catalog) yields no response .

The crucial thing would be the location where your projects will be saved on various platforms, but to do a meaningful test, I need to push another version anyway (sorry).

I'll check. It should show a guide in a flap.
Thank you!

Stef, I am still playing with your artifacts and noticed Sugar integration isn't working: On hitting stop button on navigator, Etoys ask if you really want to quit. If it is working correctly Etoys will automatically save project to journal and quit without asking.
In bin/botsinc_activity, these lines: ------ # now run Squeak VM with etoys image the botsinc project exec etoys \ -encoding UTF-8 -vm-display-X11 -xshm \ -sugarBundleId $bundle_id \ -sugarActivityId $activity_id \ --document BotsInc002.pr \ "" \ $args ------
have to be: ------ # now run Squeak VM with etoys image the botsinc project exec etoys \ -encoding UTF-8 -vm-display-X11 -xshm \ -sugarBundleId $bundle_id \ -sugarActivityId $activity_id \ --document BotsInc002.pr \ $args ------ (it seems you mixed wrong part of epaati :-)
I tested it on XO and think at least Sugar integration part works with this.
