I restarted Apache, which only helped for a few minutes. It's unreachable again.
No idea what's going on. The qmail activity seems suspicious, don't know if it's legit, maybe it's just spam sent to our lists.
A hopefully unrelated issue is that I get a 4 MB commit email every 2 hours. Seems to be stuck in a queue. It's the same mail every time, dated from yesterday, identical id (headers pasted below). I experimented with SVN commit emails yesterday for the /home/etoys/svn repository. Did that as root user su'ed to www-data. Now disabled again but I don't think this caused the problem.

Hmm.... I restarted Apache also before I saw this message. A glance over things otherwise did not suggest any oddities to me, but it was just a glance. Assuming it goes down again, which it presumably will, I will take a closer look around.
Regarding email issues, I'm on digest mode for the VM-dev list and since yesterday I periodically (although not that regularly) keep getting a digest with one bodiless message from either Eliot or Rob (it alternates) and usually only that message. I think maybe that has stopped now though, cross my fingers.
In any case, I'll keep my eyes open, thanks for the info.

Well, as you predicted it did go down again. I looked around and found nothing obvious in the logs but my eye was drawn to PHP/mod-fastcgi used for Mantis and I decided to restart those processes as well as Apache and the services have now been up for somewhat longer than before, so I'm hopeful.

Yes, the webserver seems to hold up fine now.
But I still get that annoying 4 MB email every two hours. Perhaps restart qmail/sendmail? I'm not sure about our setup.

It was now coming in every 4 hours.
I found the file:
/var/spool/qmail/mess/8/15590673
I deleted it and restarted qmail.
