Backups?

Hi, Now that we're betting everything on one horse, box2, it's maybe time to think about backups. Technically, I'm using rsync+powershift to backup my personal Hetzner box to another Hetzner box, and this works great. I can set it up for box2 as well, but we do need someone to donate backup space... Any takers? Regards, Cees

Hi All, All data from the old mailman setup is on box2:/mm I'm going to tune the TTL down for lists.squeakfoundation.org so we can quickly transfer. Who can finish the mailman configuration? I get regular reports lately about the fact that traffic is higher than some pre-set limit. 4.3G in 18 hours isn't yet worrisome (we've got 10G per day, roughly), but I think it is more than I would expect. So no hurry, but if someone happens to stroll around on box2 with a bit of spare time at hand, it might be an idea to sniff around what is causing the level of traffic we're experiencing - better safe then sorry before we have to pay for extra traffic (not too expensive, but still - if we can avoid it...) A Cunning Plan, even... We use the outage to move the lot. Issue is: we have an unknown condition on our mailserver. I'm not going to reboot it until we have salvaged all customer-critical services (pop, imap, smtp). And that's going to be the earliest moment that we have squeak-dev (etcetera) up and running again. What I can do - I'm a bit pressed for time but I should be able to get the job running - is rsync all relevant lists to box2, and then someone else needs to pick it up from there... Squeak CD for download?

Hello, I finally found some time to update the Squeak CD/DVD. For the DVD it makes no sense to have it for download (just too big). But the iso of the CD would be nice to have on ftp.squeak.org Is it ok to put it up? How much do we tranfer right now from the new box? Marcus

Jason, Here is what I ended up doing after talking to Radoslav and Jecel on IRC. I setup tighvncserver and the minimal X setup to support it. Here's what I did to get a working Squeak that I could connect and disconnect from. 1. Login to box2 with ssh. 2. Run the server once to get the basic local configuration started: a. tightvncserver (it will ask you for a password to use and setup ~/.vnc/) b. (Note the display number it states when it starts, I think this will vary depending on the user and how many other servers are running, but I'm not sure.) tightvncserver -kill :1 (substitute the appropriate display number for the 1 here) 3. Now edit ~/.vnc/xstartup and add something like squeakvm ~/Squeak3.8-6665.image & as the last line. 4. Start the server again tightvncserver At this point you should be able to connect from your workstation with xtightvnc box2.squeakfoundation.org:1 (again substitute the appropriate display number) It should then ask for your password and then you should be connected. There is no WM so this is no frills but you can ask Squeak to fullscreen itself and then other than the display delays it looks just like a local Squeak. You can close the window and the Squeak process keeps running and you can reconnect at will. This seems to do the job in my opinion. Minnow swiki password policy (was Re: Yet another vandalized wiki page..)

Hello minnow swiki admins & sqf box admins. I just fixed the hacked swiki page mentioned on squeak-dev below, using the special swiki admin password, so that it's reverted to its original state and unlocked for now. I happened to notice that the top swiki page (http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/1) was locked with a password other than "squeak" or "viewpoints". I thought we were using one of these for a standard public password that most squeak regulars would know, without needing the admin password. (As far as I know, there has never been a case of someone defacing the swiki who actually knew one of these public passwords... it's always been unlocked pages.) So, I set the top page password to "viewpoints". I propose that we decide on a default password for any commonly accessed swiki page which has problems with vandalism & needs to be locked. How about "viewpoints"? I know that "squeak" was the other one that was often used, but that one seems a bit too easy to guess. :) Also, "viewpoints" is already the upload password as well. (Sorry if I missed a discussion where a different default password was already agreed upon... let me know if that's the case.) I'm including the squeakfoundation "box admins" in this discussion, since they handle general squeak community admin duties and tend to follow squeak-dev pretty closely, so they should at least know about this. Also, I can share the special minnow swiki admin password with the box admins individually, which allows one to override existing locks, if that helps. The box admins are just 4 people, I think. Moving SqF SqueakSource to box2

Hi box admins. We should probably go ahead and move the 3.9alpha SqueakSource install (at http://source.squeakfoundation.org) from Cees' private machine over to box2 as Cees suggests below. That way any of the admins (including myself for this app at least) can restart the SS image if there's a problem, since it is a critical piece in 3.9alpha development. Shouldn't be too hard to move over... copy the entire directory and restart the SS image. And repoint source.sqf.org, I guess (I can't do that part). So, I think there's two options: 1. One of you volunteers to move it over. Any takers? 2.
