Damien, Great idea! As a side note, implementors, etc. seem to work fine; for whatever reason, my image was not happy, so I will probably just move some change sets into your image. One comment: the scrollbars do not work as well as they did in my previous image. Clicks between the thumb and top/bottom buttons (up/down a "page") appear to be ignored quite frequently. There might be some other lost clicks, but that was where I noticed it most. Is that a 3.10 bug? I _might_ have pre-selected the soft-squeak theme. The down-side would be to turn off some users (but I doubt those people will ever agree to a change to the GUI). Either way, I would place a workspace in the image, having expressions ready to change the theme to soft and standard, and just about anything that opens a debugger, which IMHO received the most stunning facelift of the entire image. Given the way Smalltalkers rely on it, that is a good thing because it might hook some people enough to get them to support some changes. Bill Wilhelm K. Damien, Re the change sets I had in mind, how many of you use the UF VPN to download full-text articles, and then copy BibTeX entries from scholar.google.com, and integrate them into an HTML-based literature browser? :) It's quite fragile, and cumbersome, but I try to score it against the old days of rifling through heavy books and making photo copies. If there is interest, I am certainly willing to share the stuff, but don't expect much, especially since I do most of the useful work in Dolphin. I wrote the Squeak side as part of my ongoing Linux survival course. For various reasons, I effectively have a personal internet cafe at home (one box wired, everything else on shoe-net or perhaps intranets when needed). An ever flakier windows box lead me to run up a new machine. To save money, reduce hassle, and to continue my move away form Microsoft, I tried Ubuntu. It stuck, so I wrote something that notes the most recent document in the "in basket" (whatever I last saved under a particular path), and expects me to have put on the clipboard some text in BibTeX format; it then hacks the entry with a custom field to contain the file name and appends it to a text editor on the results of the current session. Stop laughing :) It beats doing it by hand =:0 It really beats going to the library ;) More generally, I have some things aimed at solving problems hopefully to be addressed here, but they are incomplete and largely superseded by Gary's work - no hard feelings on my part :) Bill Wilhelm K. Hi, I've just uploaded a new squeak-dev beta image based on Squeak3.10-7143 which contains the new UI from Gary Chambers. If the new UI doesn't work well, please let the ui team know. In a few days, you can expect a new release with OmniBrowser changes. Changes in this version: --------------------------- - DynamicProtocols has been updated. You can now drop methods to a dynamic protocol, this will categorize the method as 'as yet unclassified'. Jason, Rob Gayvert talked about that as part of wxSqueak - I do not know how far he got, and I have seen rumblings about a morphic that is wx-friendly. If we get too many people involved, we will risk the same problems as the Squeak community as a whole. Too few, and we repeat mistakes and miss opportunities to leverage existing work. Details aside, I think MVP is the best thing since self-slicing bread, and we would do well to bring it to Squeak. Bill Wilhelm K. How would it sound to start a project to bring MVP to Squeak? I really think a framework like this will bring us further then most other things we could try. And having MVP doesn't mean we can't use Morphic for the view. Jerome, I suggest options to give your ideas a better chance to get into the image. If Pavel's kernel gets into full swing, it might become less important, but right now, people can toil away at wonderful innovations, only to be summarily rejected by the community. Squeak could be Smalltalk's answer to GCC, but the community seems bent on preventing it. I wouldn't care if it didn't have such great potential. Re MVP, my generic tracker target is certainly yours for the taking, but it won't be much good w/o a working MVP environment. You might grab a copy of the community edition of Dolphin. I could be wrong, but it strikes me as something that was done as a hack before halos were available, and then simply never removed. I can hear the panicked call now: "the menu is stuck to the mouse!" :) Is there a way to hide the details of your changes in a policy? Even if it is only globally applied (e.g. DragPolicyInelastic beCurrent), it would offer the option. If you will forgive a little Dolphin bigotry, this is something that MVP (interactors), and Dolphin specifically, handles quite well. Basically by paying more attention to the movement of the mouse and less attention the location of the hand things can be vastly improved. How can targets better track the mouse? Jason, It won't have the full effect until you change the preferences to use other than the standard Squeak theme. I recommend Soft Squeak; with the Vistary theme, I find myself struggling to read button text through the shadows. Warning: you might have some trouble closing windows after installing, so it is best to close all non-essential windows before installing. I would very much like for you observation about input focus to be true, but change the theme and try the basic controls example (class side of UITheme): even the disabled text field snatches the focus in my experience, and Gary confirmed that he had not addressed the behavior, unless he has already done it and/or I grabbed the wrong version??
