Debugging Squeak with GDB: "Cannot find new threads: generic error"

Hi all, I'm trying to debug a Squeak VM I built using GDB. However, I can't even start up Squeak: $ gdb ./bld/squeak GNU gdb 6.7.1-debian Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc. License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html> This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it. There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. Type "show copying" and "show warranty" for details. This GDB was configured as "i486-linux-gnu"... Using host libthread_db library "/lib/i686/cmov/libthread_db.so.1". (gdb) run squeak.image Starting program: /home/andre/mysqueakvm/platforms/unix/bld/squeak squeak.image [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] Error while reading shared library symbols: Cannot find new threads: generic error Cannot find new threads: generic error (gdb) Do I have to compile the VM differently in order to get it to work? FFI plugin 64 bit updates (not yet)

I have been working on updating FFI for 64 bit hosts (Linux). I've made some progress, but am well short of completing it. I work on this sporatically, so it may be a while before I can report success. I mention it here because: 1) If anyone else is working on this, please speak up so I don't duplicate the work. 2) I will need help from others to complete this, in order to cover the range of platforms and to integrate changes into the platforms sources and VMMaker. I trust that there is general interest in getting this done, but be warned that I'll be asking some dumb questions and I will need help to cover the range of supported platforms. Thanks Dave

Little omission on instructions to compile Windows VM

Hi: I compiled my own vm and found a little omission on the page http://www.squeakvm.org/win32/compiling.html, in the Customization section. VM newbie

I'm a newbie with the VM but must sart dealing with these things. Sorry if I ask something obvious or already asked, I done a quick search and not found nothing. The questions are relative to Windows VM, and are: 1. Having more than 1 vm on the box, the new downloaded VM start only when you drag the image onto the vm but it doesn't run when you double click the image. I registered (doing Open with) the new vm, but seems that even the images are opened with the older vm. It's a windows problem, that avoid to have more than an .exe to open an image when such .exe has the same name (by example I've the possibility of Open with squeak and croquet, but not more than 1 Squeak)? 2. I must recompile the VM to learn and add some simple things I read how to do on the documentation, but Imust to investigate if is possible to disable the behavior of the VM when you click on the close button on the Window. What is the memory representation of *Array?

Hi, I am trying to understand how the VM make the distinction between ByteArray WordArray ByteString and Array. I look at #commonAt:Put:, #commonAt: and #commonVariable:at:put:cacheIndex: #commonVariable:at:cacheIndex:. I see that ByteArray and ByteString a handle quite the same way except that there is a #asciiOfCharacter: and #characterForAscii:. And Array use either storePointer or storeLong32 (fetchPointer, fetchLong32 respectivily). Then I don't see the case of the WordArray. Could someone enlighten me? Thanks Mth

Evil mini.image hogging the CPU

Hi, I've just been bitten by the mini.image: Shortly after startup, the VM process freezes my computer by completely hogging the CPU. I was stumped by #>> not being understood and but didn't interact with Squeak the moment it started freaking out. Luckyily, I could kill the process from the console. The second time it happened, I never interacted with Squeak. At the time, the process had been alive for a minute or two. I had to reset the machine. Anyway, I'm using squeak 3.9.8-2 from http://ftp.squeak.org (debian package, could upgrade to 3.9.8-3) on Linux/i386. The VM works fine with other images (vanilla, ByteSurgeon, ...). I didn't find the mini.image on the net -- my thesis tutor, Michael Haupt, mailed it to me. I'm not sure it's the vanilla one (but I didn't save any changes). If anyone wants to check the MD5 hash: 9ce9e12edfaa4ce5b40fbd13f412d92f Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Thanks, André

How to Send a Message to the Squeak Image

Hello, Please let me know if this is a very VM question, and I will make sure to post it on the Beginners list instead... Anyway...I would like to use Squeak as a background tray application in Windows with a dynamic right-click menu depending on the state of my application. I have successfully modified and compiled a " SqueakVM-Win32-3.10.6" package to include an "options menu" for the taskbar icon. Keeping the menus in sync could be done using an INI file the same way as the preference menu functionality in sqWin32Prefs.c, but with custom message ID's listed there as well. However, having never poked around in the VM before (and being years since I did anything in C), I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction to post a message from within the Windows message loop that the interpreted image would see. This is obviously being done to pass keyboard and mouse events back and forth...I was just hoping someone could help me narrow down my search to find the correct functions to call on the C-side, and the correct way to listen for the message on the Smalltalk side!
