The lighter yellow background for the main center page you have now at http://wwwtest.squeak.org is nice. Better that, than exactly the same as the other panes or white. In looking further at the purple, center pane background at http://www.squeak.org, the links color is a bit too close to the background color to be nicely visible, but a bit lighter purple version might be quite nice too.

OK... back to the pastel colors. Check the test site out now. What do you think?

Well, I'd personally desaturate the beige in the main text block, or replace it with something else entirely. The problem is that beige really clashes right next to the blue heading bars, IMHO. Color co- ordination can be a real PITA, but something about that beige/off- white and blue doesn't seem to mesh well to me. As with everything aesthetic, insert obligatory IMHO disclaimer here.
I'm liking it except for: Top left pane looks washed out to me. Perhaps closer to the blue of the headers would be good and it would link your eye to the main headers.. I could go along with desaturating the beige of the middle pane. The purple is not my favourite but I am not totally against it either. I think the text in the Weekly Squeak was a bit easier to read with the beige background before.
Otherwise it's getting close. Looks quite readable.
I was watching for awhile when you were trying different colors on wwwtest. Wow, some of them were quite something, weren't they! :) Kinda hard to get a good overall look. One thing might be to do a screen capture, and shrink it down to get a sorta overall feel. (attached)

That's exactly what I had before, with the same rationalization. I had a complaint about it, so I tried to go "pastel"-ish. I'm kinda liking this chalk blue. But, i can change it back. Anyone else?

I actually made it the color of the previous side boxes as you suggested. But, I don't like it either so I'm changing it back.

Yes, it absolutely was. But, I'm trying to go toward the pastel and the squeak-ish colors. I think it's fine.
Here's a shrunk version of the latest. Are these helpful to you?
What if the headers are exactly the same color of dark blue as the left top pane?

Personally, I think this looks quite nice and clean, better than with a colored background!
