Me too. Put up something on the test site :-) Karl

All,
OK. I've put some "Powered by ..." logos on the test site: http://wwwtest.squeak.org/
Adjust them as you desire. Might want to copy images to box2 server and edit CSS accordingly.
Cheers, Darius

Nice. You can also add them as resources to SmallWiki. karl
I can't upload the files as a Resource to wwwtest.squeak.org. I keep getting proxy errors.
Here are the two new "Powered by ... " logos, if someone can do this for me.
I've put references in a table. Doesn't seem to want to center though.
Cheers, Darius

The pictures are quite big. How about resizing them so they all fit on one row and put them in a table ?

The "Powered By Squeak" is great.. but kinda big. Some suggestions (this early in the morning and I'm still asleep!): * reduce the icon sizes (just a bit) * Reduce "powered by" a lot, change the angle to flat, change the font to something appropriate, with no shadow, and move it some place else - like maybe up above to the left. Maybe overlap one of the icons. You could swap the icons so that "Powered By" is over the battery and not the main button. * Reduce "Squeak" a bit, change the font appropriately, remove shadow and center it below the icons. Maybe need to spread it out to accommodate the width of the icons. * Have fun with it until you're satisfied.
I think it's cool.
You could also use only one icon. Another idea is to reduce the size of one icon and make the other prominent.

OK. I forgot. You're the "minimize to the max" folks. ;-) I'll work it a bit more.

OK. Done with the logos.
What do you think?
Darius,
I like what you've done with the Squeak logo. Nice job! The only two things that I would suggest are: * Need a smaller version. And maybe a tiny version and an itsy-bitsy version. * Change the fonts to a type of sans serif style. I wouldn't get fancy with the fonts UNLESS there is a font that people identify squeak with. I don't think there is. Also, if you use a sans serif style (like helv, ariel whatever) the logo will scale better when going smaller and smaller.
You might also think about the color of the logo. Since the site seems to be settling on the background of a light bluish-purple pastel, you might want to contrast that with changing the logo color to something with a yellow-base (like #e9b720) or a red-base (like #ff5230) so the logo will stand out on the page. You would definitely have to play around with it. I would also add that the other two colors at the site will make it a bit harder to find the right logo color --- but I would not let the green and orange colors influence your color choice.

Thanks Brad,
Several of those points crossed my mind as well. However:
Need a smaller version
The professional look comes from the gradients. The gradients are just going to turn into blurs if we go any much smaller because of hard limit of pixel size.
I wouldn't get fancy with the fonts UNLESS there is a font that people identify squeak with.
For me this font give the sense of the exotic, the '60's (because of Tolken), a finely detailed linguistic system (also because of Tolken), the renaissance, the classics, and the magic of an ancient, wise elfin race, and a place for halflings to explore. All of these nicely describe Smalltalk & Squeak.
Maybe we _should_ start to associate Squeak with a font. :-)
changing the logo color
If this goes on another site, any change might not match those sites. One could never win at that game. You could also say that the logo matches the color of the title bar at the top, which already clashes with the purple blue of the body. ;-)
Cheers, Darius

Yeah, I admit you have to make compromises when doing logos. Having logos or other commercial images that scale well means they will be used more often (and your logo will be chosen for other uses!)

Sure, we could. The font is cool, I don't disagree. But, I still think it should represent squeak and the squeak community.... what ever that is... :-)

Absolutely! but, you have to start someplace.
My comments were only suggestions from a non-professional graphics guy.
FWIW I like it very much. I'm not a Graphics Designer by any means, but I like it. RE: associating a font with Squeak, I don't see it as a necessary thing. However, if we want it to happen then putting it in the logo of the website would be the way to go!
One more thing -- the logo gets lost on the bottom of the first page. Perhaps due to its size it would need to remain there, but I think having it higher would be better. So, if size is the issue then it should stay at the bottom of the page. If you shrink it with any fidelity down to the width of the download box I think it would be nice to be above the download box.
On the same note, having it on every page would be really good as well! I think it should be just as obtrusive as the downloads or quick links. Perhaps the download box could move under the menu box and then we'd have the log and links on the right-hand side of the page.

How can we put http://wwwtest.squeak.org/SqueakLogoSmaller/?action=SWMimeView under the navigation menu in the left column?

Define a new div class in the style script and add a custom template and give it that name. Here is how I have done that in the past: I grab the style script from the test server, make the changes I want. Put the edited style script up on my own web page. Link in the style script on the test server and tweak till it looks right.
Let me know if you need help with that.

I did a fast test with the logos on the test site . I added a custom template I called 'bottom links', though they do not link anywhere yet :-) No changes to the stylescript was needed for this template. What do you guys think ? You can modify it in templates/settings. karl
I like the icons at the bottom as karl has created the template.
Let's go with it and I'll delete the wiki page segment.

Ok, fixed up the links and deleted the wiki stuff. I still think the logos could be fixed a little. Karl
Can I push this to the live site now?
