Hi guys,
Just FYI, I recently moved my server to Hetzner where for 50 EUR/month I got a real machine with 16GB RAM, 2x3TB disk, 20TB traffic/month, the newest CPU. So, why wouldn't we simply move everything to a newest Hetzner server instead? It will be way cheaper than all other choices I hear here so far.
Best regards Janko
I guess the communication on this has been less than clear. Softlayer and Gandi services are being pursued as donations, i.e. free of cost. Gandi is a Software Freedom Conservancy donor as I understand and so as such may provide services for free as a donation to our project under that umbrella. The deal with Softlayer as I understand it is due to a general donation program and entered the discussion due to a relationship to one of the Board members. The Softlayer offer is possibly time limited.
I also have no problem with Hetzner. But free is cheaper than cheap.

I guess some of the background discussion didn't get relayed ... Back in June the SFC made a sponsorship deal with gandi.net giving all the member projects access to free VPS hosting and SSL certificates. We were pursuing this in parallel to the Softlayer hosting offer (as reported in the 7/16/12 board meeting notes). It now seems this is quicker to get set up than the Softlayer one, and since we need to get a replacement host for squeakci.org until the end of October, Chris contacted the SFC again, and they asked us for details. The replacement for our Hetzner box is still planned to be at Softlayer.
So the only thing the Gandi VPS would run for now would be Jenkins. And maybe if we need another server we could get an additional one instead of making this larger? I'm not that experienced with virtual servers.
At the minimum it would need enough RAM to run all the tests in one Squeak image, and disk space to hold all the builds.
I'd call it box3.squeak.org, since the current one is box2.

PS: By coincidence, didn't we discuss back in January that Gandi is a nameserver for us already?

It would help if I knew the intention: Is the goal to replace the entire current Hetzner server with a single Gandi VPS instance? Or is this meant to just be one server out of two or three we use in the future?
What happened with Softlayer? I'm completely out of the loop here and I don't know at this point what you are trying to accomplish.
If I can wish upon a star then we could make very good use of 4 cores, 4GB RAM, and 500GB of disk. The cost of that though seems ridiculous. Keep in mind that one of the primary things we do is store and serve content, and images and .source files are not small. It seems like disk space is what drives up the costs quickly at Gandi and really it would be difficult to manage with less than 148GB of disk, although good and readily accessible backup could reduce that somewhat. It seems we also have to plan for the future though, perhaps for many years into it, and disk space is constantly consumed. The cores are least important although 2 would be very nice anyway.
Of course anything less than the above would be usable for at least some part of our services I'm sure. Please find my public ssh key attached. What we call it is I assume an internal detail and so as such is not very important.

I can set you up with a VPS at Gandi: let me know what RAM and disk size you need and the name you want for the server and an SSH key to give root access to.
What size RAM and disk should we ask for? I guess we should call the server "Squeak" or something. What SSH keys should we send?
Thanks, Chris
