X window handling

Hi Ian, David, I think you're the experts for Squeak X window handling ... What would be needed to modify the Unix VM to not open a window until the beDisplay() primitive is called? That's how the Mac and Acorn VMs handle things, making headless operation controllable from the image. David, I guess this would be similar to how your XDisplayControl plugin works? Secondly, what's your estimate of making the host window support work? It is implemented on Win and Mac VMs but not X11 yet. It basically is just some primitives to open, close, resize, and move windows, and display bits, plus the event reporting to the image needs to set a window index field. For OLPC I need the ability to have multiple top-level windows, and I need to know their XID from the image. I only ever need to draw and handle events in the top-most window since all windows are full- screen (*). That means the full host window plugin support isn't actually needed, but I think it still makes sense because OLPC development continues on Mac and Win, too. If at all sensible I'd like to avoid OLPC-specific bits in the VM. Besides, more folks seem to be interested in multiple window support. Anyway, what's the best way to approach this? Anybody taking it on? Or at least lending me a hand? ;) - Bert - (*) I tried to convince the OLPC folks to support multiple activity instances (**) sharing a single X window but so far I failed. Building Squeak 3.9-9 on an Intel Mac

Hi All, I know this question has been asked on the Mailing List several times, but I couldn't find any solution to my specific problem in the archives. I'm trying to build Squeak on an Intel Macbook Pro. I have all the build pre-requisites. TT fonts over 100 MB!

Now guys this is something that didn't come up till now... I installed a set of Unicode TT fonts (liberation-fonts-0.2) in the latest OLPC eToys image which are about 1 MB and when i saved the image it grew more than 100 MB! How does Squeak load TT fonts? Does it convert them to bitmap fonts before using them? Such a huge amount of space only for fonts is unacceptable for OLPC which has only 1 GB of space... Christos.

New Win32 VM [m17n testers needed]

Hi Folks - Thanks to some dedicated OLPC-related work done in Greece by Chris Petsos[1], we now have a Windows VM with Unicode support enabled. This VM will both generate UTF input from characters as well as support clipboard, file and directory names in UTF-8. Greetings everybody... Got around with the shortcuts issue and i am posting the solution... Like i said earlier we'll have to map the Unicode values to the Squeak specific shortcuts. A simple mapping dictionary did the work...it was less than half an afternoon work...a few buffer prints, some copy paste to a spreadsheet and it's there...So, the UnicodeIputInterpreter has this method... nextCharFrom: sensor firstEvt: evtBuf | keyValue | " Unicode charCode expected as the sixth data member ! This is my work around for keyboard shortcuts with the Unicode VM... The UnicodeInputInterpreter has this method nextCharFrom: sensor firstEvt: evtBuf | keyValue | " Unicode charCode expected as the sixth data member ! " "If Alt or Ctrl is pressed and we have a unicode char code... delegate shortcut conversion to the locale specific class..." (((evtBuf fifth = 2 or: [evtBuf fifth = 8])) and: [evtBuf sixth > 255]) ifTrue: [ keyValue := evtBuf sixth. ^ Character value:(((Locale currentPlatform) languageEnvironment) unicodeToLatinCharMap:keyValue).] ifFalse: [keyValue := evtBuf sixth.]. ^ keyValue asCharacter. (OK, it needs some refactoring but you get the clue...) Now the specific locale class (for me is the GreekEnvironment class) must have an instance method called unicodeToLatinCharMap:charCode that will convert the unicode char codes to MacRoman codes that work for the shortcuts. I know the the all-around conversion back to MacRoman seems redundant, but at least we avoided the pollution of the unicode environment classes with locale specific code... The trick was that we can get an instance of the current LanguageEnvironment, without referring to it, with (Locale currentPlatform) languageEnvironment Good Smalltalk...good... I don't know though for how long we are going to get away with it this way... Christos.

Yoshiki had already sent a screenshot that shows that he can display file names properly so we know that WideCharToMultiByte and back works (see http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2007-June/117487.html). The problem appears to be on the IME input (which has no relation at all to those functions). Cheers, - Andreas
