change to struct foo {} fum declaration

Hi, As part of my new role, I'm still trying to compile and understand all the building process... and testing with a 5.x produced I found that the tiny benchmarks for my vm and for the 5.x series was significantly worse than it's predecessors (4.x). The difference is significative (32 million send in 5.x/44 million send in 4.x). Trying several optimizations with John, he found that changing the declaration: struct foo { ... } fum; to static struct foo { ... } fum; speeds the execution, up to 48 million send, which is very reasonable. So, I want to change the default definition of fum variable (to "static struct foo"). What do you think? Cheers, Esteban

Squeak on iOS4.2

I checked out a copy of the sources as directed on isqueak.org and tried to build, but ran into a couple of problems. I wanted to start with as much stability as possible so I figured I'd check out the standard VM before Cog. First, my base SDK was missing. I googled that. Found this: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#qa/qa2010/qa1701.html Followed the instructions there. It didn't seem to change anything, but it's worth noting that I did change my settings per this article. I'm guessing what I found below overrides those settings? Anyway, it's worth noting that when I was finally able to build, I did so after following those instructions, so I'm not sure at this time whether or not they were necessary. I don't have a 3.2 or 4.1 SDK. I searched for a bit and didn't find a place to get either one. Xcode complaints were of the form 'iphoneos4.1', so I grepped. stratosphere:vm casey$ grep -rl iphoneos4.1 . | grep -v svn ./SqueakPureObjcCogVM.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj stratosphere:vm casey$ grep iphoneos4.1 ./SqueakPureObjcCogVM.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj SDKROOT = iphoneos4.1; SDKROOT = iphoneos4.1; SDKROOT = iphoneos4.1; SDKROOT = iphoneos4.1; SDKROOT = iphoneos4.1; SDKROOT = iphoneos4.1; Did a search/replace-all and changed these to iphoneos4.2. I struggled with dialog boxes complaining that Xcode detected tomfoolery on disk and wanted to overwrite my changes after modifying this file. If I did this again, I'd probably quit Xcode, make the modification with a text editor, and then reopen Xcode to build. Once this was done, it was just a matter of resolving the dependencies on the Pharo and Squeak .sources files, and voila: I was looking at John's Obj-C bridge in the iPhone simulator with a big grin on my face. All in all, it was a fun half hour! Now to make some tea and get to bed. Sorry if this is old news, figured I'd write it down in case it'd help anyone else:) -- Casey Ransberger

Help with crash :(

Hi...as you may read in another thread....I am playing around with CompiledMethods and putting proxies for them. In my tests, everything goes well. But now, I am trying to automatically swap out all unused methods. Of course, so far I am excluding A LOT of packages (all methods of all classes of that package), classes and some particular methods. Everything that sounds complicated ;) And then...I swap everything. I can swap everything without problem, but it crash when trying to uninstall all proxies. I had put SqueakDebug in 1 for the VM in order to get the most info as possible. So far, all the crashes shows something like the following in the console. I have no idea what does it means or where can I look. All I can tell you is that I am putting proxies and use them as compiled methods. Not necessary SmallIneteger, but a subclass of ProtoObject. Thank you so much in advance. [ANN] New Smalltalk VM Beginners mailing list

Hi everybody. We want to announce that we've created a mailing list called "Smalltalk VM Beginners" where all the people interested in VM can share knowledge. The aim of this mailing list is create a good and positive energy and spread the knowledge around the Squeak VM. If you always wanted to know something on the VM but never dare to ask, join the mailing-list, may be we will not know it but we will try hard to learn it together. The idea is that we can help each other, welcome people to learn about the VM, and increase and share the knowledge about it in the community. Everybody can ask questions, everybody can help. This mailing list has more or less the same idea of pharo-users or squeak-beginners. Now, to clarify the objectives of the mailing list, we propose some requirements: - Be polite, respectful. - No question is stupid and all questions are welcome. We welcome the most basic questions someone can ask about the VM like, "is it written in C?" "How can I download the code?" - This mailing list should be useful for people that are just interested in knowing a little about the VM, to those who want to know how certain things are done, and specially for those that are learning about the VM because they need to extend or modify it. - If you have a heavy question, you will probably not get the answer in this mailing-list but this is not a problem you can ask in the Squeak VM mailing list. - The idea is that we can help each other. How can I generate Cog ?

Hi. I want to build a CogVM but generating the sources from VMMaker. I checked in all Cog documentation and I didn't find how to do it. So...here are my questions: 1) Which packages and versions (dependencies) do I need to load in addition to VMMaker? the same than in normal SqueakVM ? 2) In which Pharo (if possible) does VMMaker-oscog.xxx should work ?? In 1.1 I have deprecations for the wolrd menu, and then an error in initializePrimitiveErrorCodes I then tried in Pharo 1.0 didn't work neither...a dnu with Smalltalk endianness...etc So, right now, I am checkeing the image from here: http://www.squeakvm.org/svn/squeak/branches/Cog/image/ But....even without genereting from VMMaker, I cannot compiled cog. Problem with #garbageCollect and -memory parameter

Hi folks. I am using the standard SqueakVM 4.2.5beta1U. If I run normaly the VM with a normal Pharo image and I print Smalltalk garbageCollect -> I get something like 492130460 Now...if I run the vm with the parameter -memory 1500m and I then print Smalltalk garbageCollect -> I get a NEGATIVE number like: -619402660 I guess there is a problem in somewhere like ObjectMemory >> bytesLeft: but I don't know... Anyway, the problem in my case is in SmalltalkImage: okayToProceedEvenIfSpaceIsLow "Return true if either there is enough memory to do so safely or if the user gives permission after being given fair warning." self garbageCollectMost > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "quick" self garbageCollect > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "work harder" ^ self confirm: 'WARNING: There is not enough space to start the low space watcher. If you proceed, you will not be warned again, and the system may run out of memory and crash. If you do proceed, you can start the low space notifier when more space becomes available simply by opening and then closing a debugger (e.g., by hitting Cmd-period.) Do you want to proceed?' Since both of the first answers false because, of course garbageCollectMost and garbageCollect are negative.... then I have that poup all the time. To fix this I have to posibilities: 1) Just patch this particular method to: self garbageCollectMost. self primBytesLeft > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "quick" self garbageCollect self primBytesLeft > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "work harder" Notice that primBytesLeft is answering correct. Wait..I don't know if correct, but at least possitive: 5691396 I think this is possitive because the primitive is not receiving a parameter, and thus, Interpreter >> primitiveBytesLeft evaluates the first part of the method, which just does self sizeOfFree: freeBlock , and not the second part where it does self bytesLeft: aBool. 2) understand why it is negative and fix it from the VM side (I have no idea how to do this). Now, in addition, I wonder if there may be other places broken because of this....I am having some crashed and I don't know why :( Thanks in advance, Mariano
