Apart from the problems with reproducing the shell path lookup (doable and there's bound to float code for that on the Net), the real killer here, as was remarked, is that admins may mark the executable as execute only. Without the read bit set on the file, you can't do the checksumming. It smells like a hack, too - it'd be much cleaner just to have a UUID generated on each build, that would *exactly* represent what you are looking for and would be relatively simple to implement on all platforms (except for wxSqueak, probably, it using MSVC to be built but that's something that needs to be solved as well :-))
