If you're trying to extract it on a non-unix machine you might have trouble with soft links. I've had a few similar problems in the past.

thanks - it's FC5. Just seems like the file is corrupt. If someone could download the same file and try to extract it, I'd know it's ok and it's my fault :-(
(Squeak-3.9-7.src.tar.gz extracts just fine)
