Hi
Apparently some high-level managers at cincom are questioning about the interest of having the non-commercial version of VisualWorks. Apparently the idea of a time-bombed version is circulating. I think that we can help VWNC if we would simply fill this form
http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/scripts/SurveyMain.ssp
I filled it and stated that having a trial version limited in time would be an step backward and that eventually I would migrate to other smalltalks Smalltalk/X and Squeak are great and Smalltalk/X deserves more attention.
I really think that one of the aspect of the survival of VisualWorks is linked to the existence of the NC version. I do not think that ezboard would exist today if they could not have build a working prototype. I know friends developping in VW in the worse time of Objectshare that were desesperate and I remember the idea of buying the stock option of Objectshare.
The VisualWorks engineering team is working in the right direction and a strong VisualWorks is important for the ***entire*** Smalltalk community, so do not think that you are not concerned because you use Squeak or another Smalltalk! You are, we need a strong VisualWorks full of success stories.

Hi Stef
I found cincom's position about licenses unfriendly for developpers, Dolphin smalltalk's position is much simple and clear for developpers IMHO. What is the status of Smalltalk/X ? Is there a mailing list or newsgroup ? "stéphane ducasse" ducasse@iam.unibe.ch a écrit dans le message de news: 0C0A30F5-8F78-11D8-95DF-000A9573EAE2@iam.unibe.ch... Hi

Hi Alain
Basically smalltalk/x is free but you do not get support. This is not open-source because I imagine that claus was a bit afraid that he could not sell software, but I guess that this is just because he is not aware of alternative to GPL.
Smalltalk/X is compatible with VW, it runs well and fast. some stuffs such as the concurrency model are better than VW. In fact claus had a threaded UI model long time ago.
For the mailing-list I do not know. It seems that there was a wiki somewhere. Have you looked at www.exept.de?
