Hello Diego,
We (squeak-fr@) have an updated French.po at http://www.ofset.org/~hilaire/French.po I know some of the msgid are wrong. These msgid were extracted by a third party and my knowledge of Squeak does not allow me to figure out yet what's wong in the extraction process.
However, I try to import this French.po in the Squeak 3.7. However the gettext import does not work with my 3.7 image. Is it a known problem or only a problem of myself.
In the meantime, I found that importing the French.po in Small-land 3.5, then exporting as a French.translation was working. Indeed, the import of French.translation is working with Squeak image 3.7, ouf!
However I noted that the original French.po and French.translation do have different weigth. The first one weigth 790kB and the second 230kB. Oops, quite different, not sure what is lost in the meantime.

Hi Hilaire,
Sorry for the long time to answer, I was travelling for a couple of days.
Diego,
We are working in the French translation of Squeak. We have based our translation on your Small-Land-215.image. I don't know which version of Squeak it is in fact. Is it 3.6 or a pre3.8 or a 3.7?
It's based on 3.5.
Our translation work depends indeed in your work on LanguageEditor and the Spanish image. Thanks for your work.
You're welcome!
So far I have been able to re-use our translation into this specific version.
Please send me the current version of French translation to include in Small-Land image. Don't worry if it's not the definitive one.
What do we have to do to inject it in mainstream version, let's say version 3.6?
Good question, but I'm not the guy to answer. The "oficial" Squeak is in hand of the "guides" and they have to answer about it. You have to send you question to squeak-dev mailing list.
I was unable to install the LanguageEditor into 3.6. I was able to install it into 3.7 but the gettext tools is not working there, so I have used the load/save facilities, it was successfull.
In about two weeks I have to get a ready French image of Squeak to be used by junior hight-school students in an open contest. Of course I will be happy to use some of your Image with nice layout and usability, but it may be too late for me at this time.
You can use Small-Land image (the current and stable one) as the base for your work. It's quiet stable and thousands of computers in Extremadura are using it.
We also have a plugin, and I'm working on the migration to 3.8.
So I suggest to reuse my work and build on top of it.
Oh, a last question, when I try your last smallland image, I was able to load some French tutorial, however the accent characteres were broken, is there some changment in the characters encoding? (Switching to utf-8?)
Which image? 3.8? It's a known bug and I think Yoshiki/Michael are working on it.
Thanks for any help and advices,
Regards,
Hilaire Fernandes
PS: Your new Squeak image has a look'n fell a bit like Gnome Desktop. I am developing the GTK+ 'DrGeo' software for dynamic geometry. Do you know this software?
Not, I didn't... I'll find the time to play with it.
Cheers,

Jean-Marie Zajac

It was described previously.
Diego it seems that if you load translation using the language editor and save them then we lose translations.
I think, the situation is totally worst.
Several msgid are duplicated (maybe this is not a problem of babel but of initial duplicated message in Squeak)
For example the re-exported .po file from smallland come with 'new' 600 untranslated messages plus many dropped translation. Some of these messages were previously translated and now are untranslated and eventually duplicated.
It seems to me that as long as i18n will not be considered seriously upstream (not to mention look-like-isolated-Diego-effort), localisation will be a mess.

This is strange because diego used that for his languages. I will contact him.

Quelle image utilises-tu 3.7?
la dernière stable
