[Etoys] 2 button mouse confusion

Hi, Have just switched over to a recent EToys image (about this system says EToys 3.1 latest update 2177). I have a 2 button mouse (well, a touchpad with 2 buttons underneath), and I want to access both halos and context menus. Something has changed in this area since the last images I was using. By default, right button now gives me a halo. So does Alt-left-button. I don't know how to get a context menu up now. If I swap buttons 2 and 3 in the preferences, (and this is the new and confusing bit), while right button now gives me a context menu, so does alt-left-button. This alt-left-button menu used to always give halos, I think. So, how can I get a context menu up with the default mappings? cheers, Simon

[Etoys] Issues concerning translation

Hello! I'm currenly reworking the French translation, and I noticed several little annoyances: First, some strings not present in the POT template. Are the "translated" message missing in the source? I provide below the incriminated string, as displayed in English (with the correct case). - "fix layout" in the halo menu for the script editors, - "Script Editor" - "Forward direction (hold down shift key and drag to change it)" on any green arrow, - "Etoys Activity" in the Sugar navigator - "PaintBox" - "GStreamerPlayer" - "A ChessMove" - "translucent" and "no color" in the color chooser panels. I'll very probably discover other ones later on. Then, I've some trouble with certain strings, used both in the viewer categories and in another place. For instance, the string "restore base graphic" is present in the viewer category Graphics and in the object context menu. I would like to translate it differently in both case (for instance, capitalization and infinitive in the menu (->"Rétablir l'apparence initiale"), and third person of simple present in the viewer ("Sketch. reprend l'apparence initiale"). Another annoying case: top, bottom, left, right. When I want my user to choose a position for a flap for instance, I need to translated it "En haut / en bas / à gauche / à droite". In the category "Geometry", it's simply "haut, bas, gauche, droite". Any suggestion to improve these localizations issues? Greetings, Séverin

[Etoys] Reorganizing the viewer panels

Hello, I'm wondering if someone already tried to set up default visible panels in the viewer of specific objects . For instance, the joystick: when its viewer shows up, we get the basic tiles (move, turn...) which are not relevant most of the time, and the category "Joystick" with the interesting tiles is buried down into the categories menu. It would be nice to alter the default viewer layout for certain objects. Last time I had a look at it, I couldn't figure out any obvious way to do it... Have a nice day, Séverin

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't trying to answer Paul's question. It just brought to mind something I have been thinking about off and on for a while: could we use Turtle Art as a stepping stone into Etoys in a manner similar to what I did with Berkeley Logo. Leverlig the s-expression interface sounds like the easiest path. Another route would be to just re-implement Turtle Art in Etoys itself. [Etoys] Pinned vs. Unpinned Menu Behaviour

Environment: Sugar-on-a-Stick, Soas-200902022242.iso I find that when I pin an object's menu, the mouseover action does not activate the submenus like it does in the unpinned menu. This may be by design or not, but I find it unergonomic to have to press and hold the mouse button while perusing the menu. (Extensive static muscle contraction is undesirable.) Could this menu behaviour be changed? Thanks for the great learning tool! --Frederick Grose

[Etoys] Technical Report on OLPC Etoys

A new Technical Report has been posted to the VPRI website, titled "Etoys for One Laptop Per Child" by Scott Wallace, Yoshiki Ohshima, and Yours Truly: http://www.vpri.org/html/writings.php Abstract We present an overview of the “OLPC Etoys” system, describe the intensive two-year development effort that produced the system, and discuss lessons learned. OLPC Etoys is an end-user authoring system for children, which was chosen to be distributed with the OLPC XO laptops at an early stage of the OLPC project. Since we planned to derive OLPC Etoys by evolving an existing, mature system (“Squeakland”), it was expected to be a relatively straightforward undertaking. However, the OLPC XO platform’s special hardware characteristics, the evolution of the Sugar software stack, and the fundamentally international and multilingual nature of the project, all conspired to make the development effort challenging. Over the two-year course of the project, we successfully kept up with the challenges, and delivered usable Etoys systems for every OLPC release. We steadily improved the UI, added a few high-leverage features, and ﬁxed bugs, with a small and widely-distributed team and with help from the community. - Bert -
