The same bug occurs in Squeak Trunk, but not in Squeak 3.0 (12 years old) where you can happily, though pointlessly, rotate flaps. However, the workaround of removing the rotation handle seems fine for now. (This is done for SugarNavigatorBar in 5.0.1, but not for other flaps.) Note that if a user tries to rotate a flap from its viewer or a script, the DNU will also happen, so a deeper workaround should be to disable all the rotation vocabulary from flap scripting. It would be nice if we could track down the regression at some point: not for the cool factor, but just for cleaner code :) I can see that fullBounds is not being set for the TransformationMorph, but I can't see why not, so I'll leave that to those with more experience, if you don't mind. How can I play a sound from time A to time B?

So I figured out how to read in a paragraph of text and split it into separate words I can highlight as I read. Still need to play around a bit to handle the different fonts/sizes and kerning. Each word is its own Text object embedded in a Rectangle which "highlights" the words as I read. I set the "highlight timing" by using the keyboard as I record the sound. Then make minor adjustments as needed. This will play fine in reading the whole sentence/paragraph. But I want the user to be able to click on a word and hear that word spoken. Rather than re-record each word, I would like to be able to play a snippet of the recording. So... How do a play a sound recorded in Etoys from time A to time B? Cheers, Stephen

paper about etoys in different countries

Dear educators, I had a chat with Lidia on the weekend and one thing we came up with was the idea of having a comparative paper about the use of Etoys in different countries. She is currently writing something in that direction for a conference in Buenos Aires, but this needs to be finished by the end of this week. So I wanted to ask you if someone would be interested and able to write something on this short notice. But I think it would be great to write something for another conference (which?) with a deadline further away ... What do you think? Of course, we need a very good outline to get a piece that fits well together (but we know how to write collaboratively now :) We could start with the formal environment where Etoys is being used like regular classroom lessons or afternoon programs, and how it fits into standards (if at all), it is being evaluated? How can I "highlight" different words in text for a "read-a-long"

Folks, Was talking with Mike Lee about Lubutto project and showing him Event Theatre and he had the great idea of using it to have folks "record books/stories" kids create. We would like something to highlight the words as they are read (not auto-magically, the reader could hit a key to highligh to the next word. But how can I "highlight" (change color/make bold/change backgroung color) for the "next word"? We could break the reading into multiple text objects but that would be time consuming and annoying. Better to have the computer to what its good at and do it for us. Any suggestions on how this could be done? Thanks, Stephen

Hi, I ran into the following problem with a couple of projects done on a PC using: etoys5.0 Latest update:#2406 One of the projects is attached, I get the same set of messages with another. The projects do not work in etoys4.1 latest update: # 2390 The messages are: This project was created from a more recent version of Etoys and may not. . . . proceed anyway? Yes Reading an instance of GraphPaperParameters. Which modern class should it translate to? type think find I tried choosing "type. . . " and typed my initials in the box and got another box asking for my initials and then a message, "Please complete the following method and read-in the object file again. Clicked "Ok" and then windows opened: "Implementors of graphPaperParametersbggsddo0" and another, "Message not Understood: UndefinedObject What I am supposed to type? I remember something about this before but not the detail. I will go ahead an update the software on the computers I am using in a workshop but thought I should report this problem to you.
