Aha! Shift-drag is not in the Etoys Reference Manual. Thanks. I'll add it to the User Interface chapter this afternoon. I just tested this for the case of a Paintbox moved behind its Sketch Editor, where I can grab the object in the background if I drag so as to surround it but not the Sketch Area. It turns out that the Sketch Editor does not respond to a right-click with the eToyFriendly preference on, but does respond with it off. So that's a second method. lost paint palettes

Hello, Is there a way to retrieve a paint palette that has been moved out of sight but the paint scrim still is visible? And, can we prevent this from happening? Several times this past week with middle beginners, the palette was gone and they could not tell me what they did. I know the paints' halo does not have an *X* but it is possible to use the black handle and move it completely out of sight. Sometimes when that happened the paint brush was the only cursor and the project could not be continued and sometimes the cursor appeared when outside of the paint scrim but there was no way to trash the scrim and the project had to be abandoned, started again. Looking further into this,the paint palette's white menu includes 'send to back' which is a command that can not be undone because it puts the palette behind the scrim. I tried to open the world menu to see if 'round up strays' would help, but the world halo will not appear when the scrim is visible and the palette is missing. It is discouraging for beginners who lose the work they have done up to that point that day. In classroom use this is a problem for the student and for the teacher because it is course work and not casual play at home. CAPLock-ALT- . does not help in this case. Regards, Kathleen

This inconsistency of pushpin use is but one of many such cases where I find that we need an extensive and detailed refactoring of all of Etoys and Squeak. The sloppiness of text demands complete proofreading. The definitions that fail to define and the help text that fails to help also. I am making notes in the draft Etoys Reference Manual of such things, and providing alternate definitions and help. I am thinking also about how to create a manual for discovering Etoys, with only such hints as are required at various levels. How much of Etoys and Squeak can we teach in third grade, where numerous experiments show that we can teach text-based programming? How much of Etoys can we teach to preliterate preschoolers, using nothing bearing text? What if we rejiggered the scripting tiles to use only graphics to identify objects and Unicode symbols as names of functions, as I have done in a version of Turtle Art? menu pushpins

Hi, The pushpins are very useful to beginners but they are not always available as menus are opened from within menus. It would help beginners if the pushpins were always available as they use these menus. Consistency would help them predict what would happen if they use it or choose not to use it. Examples: Sketch's white menu-painting has many useful choices but does not stay open is the cursor moves too much outside of it nor after an option has been selected. The option in that menu to erase pixels of color can erase the whole object and if the menu feels too transient students and students are reading a long list, and feel hurried to choose, sometimes not what they wanted. Border style has a pushpin but fill style and drop shadow do not have pushpins. Regards, Kathleen

Attempting to re-record sound, causes sound-output freeze

Hi all. We are facing the following issue on XO-1.75. 1) Go to "Supplies" -> "Sound Recorder", and record a sound. 2) Click "Play"; the (recorded) sound plays fine. 3) Again, click "Record", and apparently record some sound. 4) Clicking "Play" does not play any sound this time. 5) Even trying to play a mp3, doesn't work fine. Squeak-VM version :: 4.4.7-2357 =============== Etoys version :: 5.0 (build 2406) =========== I have a hunch, that the sound-recorder doesn't "close" the sound-resource, once it is done; thereby causing further sound freeze. More Objects in Reference Manual

I have completed another pass over the Objects chapter in the Etoys Reference Manual, http://booki.flossmanuals.net/etoys-reference-manual/_edit/ dissecting objects into components, documenting the components, identifying the Squeak sources for Etoys objects, adding v5 objects, explaining bugs and design deficiencies, noting further information needed, and finding more topics to explain elsewhere. Review and comments welcome. I expect to make another pass again after I work on other aspects of Etoys and Squeak for a while. There was some confusion about my intention in creating a new chapter for the book on Etoys Programming. I hope that my renaming the chapter to Etoys Programming Tools will clarify that issue. As I said before, and in the little bit I have written in the chapter, it is in no way meant to teach how to program in Etoys, only to document how Etoys supports software development. Other chapters describe elements of this system (UI, scripting tiles, objects) piecemeal.
