With eToys dead ( not updated in over 2 years ) And no books in print.
What have teachers replaced eToys with? ( seeing that Squeak is a dead language )

Why you state eToys dead? Yes, the download kit on squeakland would be stable one. (the latest version is squeakland2005) But we have been working very hard on improvement for OLPC etoys (so many updates :-) and we will be able to use of the result on non-OLPC platform (next version of squeakland - will be called as "Squeakland OLPC")

Ok, so eToys is dead as OLPC has replaced it. Since I am in USA we do not have access to OLPC in the classroom.
What is the best alternative to eToys that is similar? (needs to run on Mac and Windows)
Thank you for your assistance

I would repeat: etoys is NOT DEAD and ALIVE WELL. I think you misunderstand. OLPC is just one of platform etoys run and it doesn't replace anything existing. Yes, we are developping the latest etoys mainly for OLPC platform, but the same image with appropriate VM works very well on other platforms. And in near future that will be released as package. http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/etoys/2008-February/001998.html was snapshot of the work.

Hello,
I wonder if books in print, nowadays, is so imopratan to keep a software alive. E-material available in internet seems to me of a great value for teachers and anyone else interested in using the software. Have you been to www.squeakcmi.org ? wonderful material created by Univ.of IL.
We, in Brazil are also sharing tutorials and some ideas to use squeak, in portuguese.
http://oficinas.pensamentodigital.org.br/html/index_programacao.html
and I am sure other countries are doing that too.
best regards,
marta

Not true at all - eToys are in *BEST* shape of their live!
Same eToys that run on OLPC will run on Linux, Mac, Windows: Compare to the Squeakland version, this new version is cleaner, have very good online help (called Guides, on the top left). Navigation is much easier I think.
Right now, you have to download VM and Image separately:
Image from :
http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/OLPC-Etoys080211.zip (equivalent but much nicer then Squekland version, and will replace it compatibly in the near future I believe) VM from:
http://www.squeakvm.org/index.html (need to follow to your OS section)
Give it a try, if you used the squeakland eToys version I believe you will find it a noce continuation and will be surprised,
Milan
And no books in print.

Etoys is going out to at least 750,000 children in nine countries in 2008 and 2009 on the OLPC XO-1.
Squeak by Example doesn't count as a book?

Many people call Etoys as Squeak, but these are different thing: + Squeak is a implementation of Smalltalk language and its environment. + Etoys is application written in Squeak Smalltalk and integrated to Squeak environment.
Historically we (especially etoys community) have not been differentiating squeak and Etoys very well, that have been confusing. But now we use "Etoys" specifically, by this we would make it clear Etoys isn't tied to specific implementation technology.
The SQE is a book about Smalltalk language/environment, not about Etoys. So it seems the book isn't for Joe.
