Hi all,
I've updated Trac to add two more milestones:
1.5-software-beta # due approximately Dec 1 1.5-software-final # due approximately Dec 14
I'll be promoting Trac tickets from 1.5-software into 1.5-software-beta if they're targeted at the beta release, and likewise into -final for tickets to fix by our first release to production.
The main areas still outstanding for the beta release are:
- reliable hardware and kernel suspend/resume
- turn on automatic suspend/resume
- fix Xv support
- get camera driver hooked up to Xv
Thanks!
- Chris.

As discussed in the dev meeting today we want to include Etoys 4 plus critical fixes in this XO build. The only fix after the 4.0 release is this so far:
https://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9709
The new 4.0.2337 rpm should work both on an "old" XO and on the new XO-1.5.
In particular the folks who got a 1.5 beta machine: Please test, and report back! Upgrade your machine to the latest firmware and OS, then install the Etoys rpm and XO bundle. Even saying all is fine is good, otherwise I'll have to assume nobody is testing.
Thanks!

Really, nobody? OLPC gave us 1.5 beta machines specifically to make sure Etoys works. One each went to California, Canada, France, Sweden, and Germany, if I'm not misinformed.
At least Hilaire reported this problem:
http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-565
which Yoshiki fixed, and I fixed these:
http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-600 http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-604
We'd need to decide if we want these fixes in or if they can wait. They need testing of course, and there may be other problems lurking.
- Bert -
Beside the issue you mentioned bellow I did not see any problem under XO 1 and XO 1.5. IMHO, these fixes are mandatory.

Icons for save and open looks kind of similar on OS46 download for XO1.5 Both have a down arrow thing going on.
No other issues I would categorize as Etoy issues.
No Camera support on XO1.5
The overall XO1.5 I have is quite unstable with keyboard and mouse issues. I have to unplug batteries to get back to a usable system.
And the Frame thing cause quite a few draw issues in Sugar

Okay, thanks.

True, but these are the standard Sugar icons for "insert object from Journal" and "keep in Journal". I think it's better to use the same icons as other activities.
No other issues I would categorize as Etoy issues.
Great :)
Did you try my 4.0.2337 rpm which fixes the drawing speed issue?
Also, here is a trick to do Smalltalk hacking on the XO: simply copy image and changes from /usr/share/etoys to /home/olpc/.sugar/default/org.vpri.EtoysActivity/data and also symlink the sources file. When you launch Etoys, this image will be used, and you can save it as usual.
That's how I made the bug fixes, all on the XO :)
Also, since os45, you can use olpc-update to get new OS versions. This will leave the home directory alone, and is faster too:
olpc-update f11_xo1.5-46
No Camera support on XO1.5
no driver yet: http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9534
The overall XO1.5 I have is quite unstable with keyboard and mouse issues. I have to unplug batteries to get back to a usable system.
Did you upgrade the firmware? A lot of these issues have been fixed.
And the Frame thing cause quite a few draw issues in Sugar
Yes, the flickering is annoying.

Ah, yes. I found the frame to be quite annoying and disabling it completely help to have a better user experience.

I'm pretty confident about #600, but the behavior of #604 isn't as clear-cut (though hopefully better than before).

Hi Bert,
There are new etoys based sugar activities, nice ... I intent to test 604 but did not get too far. Let me just confirm, the "crash" is a problem only on the older Sugar verions for XO1, but the 604 changeset should be tested on 1.5 to not break something else, correct?

Hi Bert,

Indeed. Kaleidoscope is nice and new. The two games are also nice, but not actually new, they originally come from Potsdam University and were uploaded by a kid from Uruguay:

No. The changesets should work fine on any XO or Sugar version.
#600 is only a problem on XO running Sugar 0.84 (that is, Fedora 11) #604 is a problem on all releases, but only on Fedora 11 you actually get an error
Basically I just need an okay from someone to push these to the 4.0 update stream. Then I can make a new release and rpm which makes it much easier to test for the others.
So if someone thinks these are at least safe to push, please say so ASAP. Time is running out.

Thanks to Milan for reviewing.
I pushed the two change sets, and made a 4.0.2339 release. This should show up in the next os build (49). Also, the rpm is in the usual place:

Hi Bert:
I tested so far manually by applying the update stream to image located in current directory:
http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-600 worked perfect (added comment to 600)
http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-604 I had an exception "30ca....pr does not exist" when clicking on the Kaleidoskop from the dot menu, after it ran once. But debugging it I see I may have done something wrong (hmm, it like 4am too). I wil wait for release 49 and test again tomorrow, and report.

ok, I installed os49 (50mb bigger for some reason) on xo 1,5 , and Kaleidoscope loads perfectly, no errors. View source also works, so all looks great.

Hi everyone,
I have run and tested etoys on XO 1.5. Except of inability to load an older project (not sure where I created it), I could not find any Etoys problem. This was with Etoys 104 (but also with Etoys 112 updated Friday) and default Sugar OS (not upgraded). I have not run Etoys from Gnome.
On Friday I updated Etoys to the latest - I thought there is an Etoys upgrade problem, until I read Bert's email which said:
" Upgrade your machine to the latest firmware and OS"
I did not upgrade OS and firmware to the latest, just left the version it came with, maybe that is why I see this problem (described below).
The problem is that there seems a discrepancy between what "Upgrade" reports and what is the latest version of Etoys. A few days ago, I went to "My Settings -> Software Update", Sugar searches and came back with one item:
"Etoys: From version 104 to 112".
When I click on "Install selected", Sugar clearly goes off somewhere, the progress bar flashes something about downloading and checking, but comes back to:
"Etoys: From version 104 to 112".
This is stil hapenning no matter how many times I reboot.
However: Going to "/hone/olpc/Activities/Etoys.activity/activity", the activity.info shows version = 112, not 104 as the message seems to suggest.
Does anyone have the same "false upgrade problem report"?
Milan
PS: I will update to the latests OS and firmware and test again.

Thanks Bert,
Then I will also test SQ-656, 600, and 604. I see 565 is in Etoys-112, but 600 and 604 do not appear to be, is that right?
so I tried to flash to latest ROM v 16 last night, battery in and connected, but the flash result said "no battery", and the battery light is not on, ven after I take the battery out. I am letting it drain and see if that changes someting. Hopefully will be able to update and test again with the latest OS+firmware, otherwise I will stay with OS that is on in.
