Hello,
I have an idea for the first screen of OLPC etoys. We have discussed that we need something like a project launcher to show etoy examples for first use. To make it easy, I made a small script to show newest 10 projects with thumbnails in "my squeak" folder. I think it is useful both browsing example projects and user made projects.
I did not publish it because I am not sure if it is really needed even when now it's "freeze" week. But if you don't have another better idea for first screen. This change set should be useful. What do you think about it?
- It searches "my squeak" directory (/home/olpc/.sugar/default/etoys/public), or you can change it in EToysLauncher>>directory. - The newest ten projects are shown. - A thumbnail can be shown if there is "project name.gif" file. - You can enter a project when you click a thumbnail. - The list is updated when you go and back project.
You can download the image including this change set in http://languagegame.org/tmp/2006-10-17-2.zip
Cheers, - Takashi
Very good idea!
Can you make it look in a subfolder of "Smalltalk imagePath", too? That way, we could more easily install the "default projects" with the image.

Hi Bert,
Makes sense, I'll fix it. Thanks! - Takashi

Hi --
One idea I had was that the "very first" screen was "Try Again", which goes through a sequence of little demos. But down the right hand side of this project should be iconic buttons for other options, such as:
- Learn how to use Etoys
- How to ...
- Recent Projects (the screen you just sent)
- All projects
- New project
If you hit any of these buttons, the "Try Again" project is both exited and flushed (to make more room), etc.
Cheers,
Alan

Hi Alan
O.K. It makes my mind clear.
I like your "Try Again" project a lot. I have tested on my test board. Although it was sluggish with the cheap CPU now, but it will be the most attractive demo in OLPC.
Cheers, - Takashi
