I can't reproduce this in Etoys 4.1.1. on Linux. When I drag the scale icon, I can stretch it in any direction. A wider aspect changes the slider to horizontal from vertical while a taller aspect reverses the role.

It only happens if your first "turn" the slider 90 degrees actually to any heading other than 0 (which I did not notice until I saw your post and retested)
