My name is Juliano Bittencourt and I'm participating of the Brazilian early tests of the XO laptop. We will implement these tests with 400 laptops on a small school in Porto Alegre (South of Brazil). All children and teachers in the school will have their own laptop. In our ideas, Squeak will have an key part in our pedagogical praxis. But we are facing some small problems in the first classes we are doing with children. The main problem is that the eToys image is in english. So I want some orientation of how to translate the etoys image and how to make this work available for others in the project? Thanks,

In the "Navigator" flap click the bluish globe icon to change the language.
That will translate most of the UI (we do not yet have translations for the newest features that were recently added). The example projects are english only for now, but it would be great if you could send translated projects back to us.
Also, the Language Editor can be used to translate missing phrases. It is included in the image already - press Alt-Shift-W to open the World menu and select "Open..." - "Language Editor for ...".

I sent Juliano (off-list) a file which contains most of the needed translated words/phrases, along with instructions on how to merge. But later he said this wasn't the real problem.
The real problem is how understand and use those projects (sent in the test machines) by teachers and kids who don't know english. My reply was either translate them in a individual basis, or create new ones and send them to this list. Or both.

Thanks for your help. Like Paulo told, the problem of the eToys translation is not related with words/phrases. Paulo already done this work. The main problem is how should we translate the projects and tutorials that eToys uses as examples? Translating the sentences isn't hard at all. But, how should I do this in a way that my work can be joined to the project tree? Using a translated version of the projects will help the students and teachers to explore eToys by their own, without depending on our help. I know that kids will discover eToys very quick and will want to explore it. It's already happening in our first classes. But until now, kids the disappointed with the english interface and gave up of eToys. Thanks for the help,

I think that projects should be ultimately translated manually.
One of the problem would be that it is not always obvious to figure out all the user-created text in a project. Sometime soon, we will have a support for that task (by extracting more info from the project). Even then, somebody still should make sure that the layout of translated text is ok.
Using a translated version of the projects will help the students
and teachers to explore eToys by their own, without depending on our help. I know that kids will discover eToys very quick and will want to explore it. It's already happening in our first classes. But until now, kids the disappointed with the english interface and gave up of eToys.
There was some discussion but we didn't take any action.
* We can create a directory in the etoys repository on laptop.org for Etoys examples in Portugese. you will need to have an account to write files on to it, so it may not be too convenient during the test.
* We/you can set up a network server decidated to a group of people to which you can "save" a project and from which others can download it. SuperSwiki2 server would be good for that purpose. Once you add the server's info to Etoys, it is painless to upload/download. The interface is be translatable, as far as I know.
Probably, latter would be good for you to get going. In bigger scale deployment with more people in one language region and more language regions, there will be more work.

Another issue is the screen resolution. We have worked in some demo of the Bookmorph with the creation of local fables [2] and they where worked in desktop PC's using Small-land image from the Extremadura project. Working with the OLPC image in bigger resolution screens is uncomfortable, because of the relative size of all the things (which makes sense in a little screen like the OLPC one), so ¿how can we made the material authored in a image available in others, even with different screen size and resolutions? Something for defining relative screen size of the objects or separation of presentation from content would be nice. May be this is even difficult because things created in a image (say Extremadura's Small-land) are incompatible with things created in others (say Squeakland) even with the same screen resolution, but Etoys OLPC can be a good opportunity for putting to talk different Squeak Images in particular and in general the "old" world of desktop impersonal computer labs and the vision of personal computer media.

Ps 1: Few days ago two XO machines arrived from customs office to the house of the lead of the project here in Colombia... I'm eager to put my hands on one of them and test Etoys there... these are exiting times :-)

How to start a New Language for EToys? We want to translate it into Nepali. Please help.
You could open the tool called "Language Editor", press the "new" button and type "np" and do it... However, the biggest problem is that current EToys doesn't support complex script shaping yet. The support is on its way, but taking some time...

Yes. As Michael (Rueger) reminded us while ago, we have a mechanism called TranSqueak to identity a way to find strings in a project. This can be a start for current version, and later (future) systems, we can add better mechanism (for example, it really keeps track of the user created data in a project)

Yeah, this is a problem. Again in the future systems, it should use scalable graphics but at this point, we need to know what it means to use the different screen sizes to author content.

One thing is that you need to use the OLPC image to be compatible with no matter what screen size you use. Again, we are making a way to extract the content data from a project and "normalize" it as a text file. Once this is in good shape, it will be a bit easier to move content around.

What would be the procedure to translate the demo and tutorial of E-toys to Spanish.?.i see that work has been done to translate those to Portuguese, but id like to see the tutorial and demo in Spanish..here in the XOs, like Offray said there are two now in Colombia :).

Actually Paulo has already translated the user interface in eToys to Portuguese and his work is included in the Squeak images for OLPC. So you just have to select a menu option to change this (I don't have it running here and so can't give you the exact instructions).
A separate issue is that the various projects include texts which for now are only available in English. It wouldn't be hard to go through each one replacing the texts but then keeping this new image in sync with the development one would become increasingly difficult. A smarter solution is needed.

As long as we do not a have a message catalog system transportable with project package, translation will be an issue. Of course if only the base image need to be translated is not that important.
