[Etoys] Etoys V4.0 and more

Folks, We are making a new major version; V4.0. This is the version that contains no code that is covered (only) by the Squeak License. In the other words, V4.0 is fully-relicensed. Please download the following image for the further development: http://tinlizzie.org/olpc/etoys-dev-4.0.zip It contains the new .sources and .changes. Some classes and methods are gone, and some methods did change its behavior. There may be some unknown issues, but in general, it is not degraded so badly. Please help us finding and fixing problems. Soon, Michael Rueger will push the initial updates to the update stream and further take on the role of managing updates. Thank you! -- Yoshiki

[Etoys] how to crop display

We want to present individual Epaath projects through a web-browser and want to do away with the sugar navigation bar so we can use the screen real-estate for html navigation. Removing the bar itself isn't the problem, but the hole it leaves behind is, as is the coordinate system. So I'm looking for a way to crop the display. There seems to be some provision for this in the Display classes (the instance variable clippingBox for example, and zooming functions), but I'm having difficulty finding where, and/or how to change the code so as to do some actual cropping. Any help would be welcome, /Ties

Announcing the General Availability of XO Software Release 8.2.0 XO Software Release 8.2.0 was developed by OLPC engineers and the OLPC open source community. The XO and its software is the only major computing platform designed specifically for the educational benefit of children in the developing world. Release 8.2 is based on a child focused graphical interface called Sugar, a Red Hat Fedora 9 Linux operating system and OLPC customized implementations of core software including power management, wireless drivers, NAND flash file system, Open Firmware, and other components. Hi, I downloaded the Etoys-dev image to my XO today and started to update it. That works fine but it's quite old and have to load a ton of updates. Maybe some of you guys could put a updated version up ? Karl

[Etoys] Avoiding batching of script execution

I have made a Lidenmayer drawing system (again) with branching, but I'm running into a issue where the script works fine on single step but batch stuff together in ticking mode. Is there a way to force the update between each tick ? I've turned batching pentrails on and of but it does not seem to be the issue here. Karl

[Etoys] Finding projects

Currently, Etoys does not require entering a project name when running in Sugar, which makes it hard to find projects later in the Journal. One way to improve this is to gather textual information from the project and put it into the metadata, see http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/4550 But maybe we could also derive a more sensible project title from the project contents? For example, MS Word defaults to the first few words of text in the document as file name. Also, we might require entering a project title for an unnamed project when clicking the "stop" or "keep" button. This is a slight violation of the Sugar interface guidelines but may be better than nothing, in particular if we pre-populate the entry with a meaningful name. The interface should be as unobtrusive as possible (better than a simple fill-in-the-blank popup). Ideas? - Bert -

Hello Pauline, The Etoys Quick Guides introduce 60 tools and techniques; to open them just click the question mark in the Navigator Bar. www.Squeakcmi.org is a web site at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign that has a Library Collection of more than 400 Etoys projects that will download to the Journal and open on the OLPC. I work there and have been using Etoys with elementary school students for four years. [Etoys] "player's" becomes "nil's"; value types

Hi all, I encountered the following phenomenon, which IMO is quite irritating. It's about "player"-Tiles in scripts with a parameter (screenshots attached). I made an empty script with a player-typed parameter an added a basic method and varaiable-assignment (EllipseTalkTo1.png): Ellipse>>talkto: player Ellipse forward:5 Ellipse's heading :=0 Then I drag player-tiles off the parameter-area to replace the Ellipse-tiles (EllipseTalkTo2.png): Now it looks like Ellipse>>talkto: player Player forward:5 nil's heading :=0 It _should_ look like Ellipse>>talkto: player player forward:5 player's heading :=0 Then I change the parameter-type to sth. different and back (EllipseTalkTo3.png, EllipseTalkTo4.png): "Player" and "nil" become "dot": Ellipse>>talkto: player dot forward:5 dot heading :=0 The _should_ be: Ellipse>>talkto: player dot forward:5 dot's heading :=0 I repeat step two an drag 'player'-tiles to replace the 'dot'-tiles. Now it looks like (EllipseTalkTo5.png) Ellipse>>talkto: player Player forward:5 Player heading :=0 It _should_ look like Ellipse>>talkto: player player forward:5 player's heading :=0 So there are three problems: - Should "player" be capitalized everywhere or nowhere? - Why does "player's" become "nil's" at the beginning? - Why is "'s" missing from the moment at which "dot" appears? And finally I have a request from the point of localization: All value-types of variables or parameters should get marked translatable. At the moment this is true for 'Color' and 'Sound' only.
