Camera working in Windows?

Hi, Patricio Acevedo, a chilean teacher asked me about the camera in windows. He says it works on the XO but not in more powerful computers. I think I recall seeing it working sometime ago but I can't remember when or in which version. Do you know if it works in windows out of the box? Or does he need to do something else? From the perspective of "minimizing user paralysis", I think there's an argument to be made against this change, and indeed perhaps even an argument to be made to go in the opposite direction: instead of forcing the user to make *two* modal decisions right away (first dream up a variable name, then decide on a value-type) it might be preferable to have the user make *no* modal decisions when adding a variable. This has long been a good choice for scripts -- we give you a default name, such as "script3", and you can leave it that way if you want or you can, at your leisure, edit the name into something useful and descriptive. But you're not blocked by being forced to give your attention to specifying a name right away. Thinking up a name can be a powerful blocker; choosing a type from list that one does not understand might be worse. Having both of these standing in the way of creating a user-defined variable might not be a good thing. Better, arguably, is to give a newly-launched variable a default name and a default value-type, and then also make it more straightforward and inviting to change the name and change the value-type, without needing to fish in menus. We did that a while ago in an internal vpri fork: add-variable gives you a variable with a default name and a value-type already provided; when and if desired, click on the variable name and text-edit to rename the variable; click on a little "value-type" icon to the right of the name to get a list of value-type choices. No modal roadblocks to getting started, no fishing in menus to make changes. This improves the work-flow of add-a-variable quite a bit, and might be a good thing for squeakland as well. Etoys project publishing with WebDav

Folks, I am looking at a project hosting site similar to Scratch for Etoys and other Sugar Activities. To maintain compatibility with existing Etoys versions I plan to use WebDav. So some assumptions to make sure I don't start down the wrong path and my understanding of how Etoys works is correct: 1. I need a WebDav Server 2. I will need to create usernames/logins for each user to allow them to connect to the WebDav server. 3. Etoys logs into the WebDav server using the UserName/password provided and then places a copy of the project in the subdirectory <username> So I need to request the following from the Sugarlabs folks: 1. WebDav Server 2. Ability to create login's (user/pass) 3. A cron job to detect newly uploaded files and parse them to get manifest information. Thanks, Stephen

I do not think it will affect your Quick Guide (assuming we leave the "decimal places..." option in the menu (which I would vote for. Also in looking at your Decimal Places Quick Guide, I noticed the following on Page 1: This menu is used to *set the number of decimal places your project uses.* * * More accurate wording would be: set the number of decimal places for this variable. (or value, not sure if we want to raise the distinction between a user defined and pre-defined variable here, probably not). The *menu shows in the Viewer and in Watchers*. Well technically it does show in a detailed watcher, but only in the Halo menu icon for the readout string, which to get to requires multiple "right clicking". So you may want to change this to shows in the Viewer.
