[Etoys] File Descriptor release?

Hello, Lately I'm moving files back and forth between a Windows PC and an OLPC test board via a USB memory in VFAT. The OLPC test board runs official OLPC kernel (build 94) that is a modified Linux. Here I have a problem to unmount the file system after Squeak opens something on the file system. A typical workflow is: * There are bare minimum stuff running on the board. On X, xterm and twm and that is it. * mount a USB memory on the board: mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt * launch Squeak. The binary of VM and image are on a different file system than /dev/sdb1. * open a FileList, and navigate to /mnt. * close the FileList. Do 'purge undo records' (just for the heck of it) and do fullGC couples of times. * go to xterm while Squeak is running and try: umount /mnt I get "device is busy" error. * close Squeak and try unmount again. I can unmount the file system this time. The VM is 3.9-8 that I compiled from the repository. Is this something to do with the Linux VFAT driver, or a problem with the Squeak VM? -- Yoshiki

[Etoys] Performance improvements form 3.9 (backported) #1

Hi, attached are some changeset that are in 3.9 which might help a little with perfomance... I have no idea how to properly benchmark this... but starting up the image, run the eToy macrobenchmark. Then I filed in all the changesets and ran the benchmarks again. Result (MacBook pro, Squeak 3.8.12beta5U): Before: #960 memory=20464928 display=1012x700x16 painter=214.8 viewer=186.4 scriptor=139.4 category=232.6 After: #960 memory=22901456 display=1012x700x16 painter=185.4 viewer=173.4 scriptor=132.8 category=214.8 The changesets have been checked and fixed against OLPC-Squeak- latest.zip as downloaded today. It would be great to hear how fast this can run on the XO board we have. It easily runs at 20+ frames per second on my Panasonic. Kim/Yoshiki, it would be great if you could tell Becky the frame speed result on the XO board. Cheers, Alan

Hello, Too many changesets are flying around and I didn't take time to explain them, but just update your image and you can see what is going on. There are still some mid-size changes are planned, but most of the critical stuff are done. We start more looking at optimizations that won't change the functionality and smaller fixes. I'll update (finally) the "-latest" images on the server for people's convenience. As you may have seen, some people on this list are getting ready to experiment real content making on the system. So, now would be a good time to start making some eToys. Then, please write about bugs, findings new ideas, and also reminder for what you already told us but we forgot^^; These items don't have to be about this "October release", so feel free a bit longer term issues. [Etoys] text rendering

Alan and everybody, I pushed two change sets that deal with some inefficiency in text rendering. Some are already known issues around the recalculation of some properties and some are a bit or tidying up of code. Most notably, True Type font rendering is much faster now. I still think the use of True Type should be somewhat limited, but for making splash screen or that kind of thing, it should be ok to use it if it doesn't change color of characters in a text (as much), and don't other stuff overlap with text (as much). -- Yoshiki

[Etoys] Sample scenarios for intros, tutorials, etc.

Hi Folks -- Let's think about what we need and/vs what we can do, and when .... What we need is something that combines the old morphic score player with the Event Recorder, etc., Etc. We've talked about this for years, but haven't done one. A scenario here is to 1. record the painting of the red car and making the forward by, turn by script for it. 2. we want to see this record laid out end to end in some readable form. It could be left to right scrolling (most normal) as in the ScorePlayer, or it could be top to bottom scrolling, etc. 3. We should be able to insert pauses, trim places where it takes too long, etc. 4. We need to lay in other events. The ScorePlayer does some of this. E.g. it will (or it used to) fire off a button placed on it when the cursor crossed the button. This can trigger other useful things, like new text appearing and disappearing, Voice Overs, effects, etc. So one practical question here is whether the ScorePlayer could be adapted to take on events from the EventRecorder and actually be the player for the EventRecorder ....? This could give us a lot of useful functionality pretty easily ... Cheers, Alan

[Etoys] New Paint brush feature.

Hello, I added new feature for paint tool in 1041DrawBackground-tak.cs. You can draw something on background of existing painting. It is effective to mimic like water color painting. It would help contents author rather than children. It was one of Alan's request list. - Start paint tool by brush icon in Navigator flap or repaint handle. - Choose color and brush size. - Draw something. - Choose another color. - Draw something with Shift + drag. I understand such Shift + drag is bad and unsophisticated. It should need proper UI in PaintBox widget. But the deadline for OLPC is very soon, so I gave up to put new button in there now.
