It defines title of each contents but caption of category buttons is statically defined in .pr and is not affected by index.dat.
That's quite possible. I'm actually not too familiar with the inner workings of the guides.
In any case, it seems to me that index.txt is a better name than catalog.txt, and that's all I wanted to point out :)
