Hello.
I had a look at the file and tried to compile it. In original PO source in the MS Word document, translations were entered as casually formatted and has syntax glitches. I created revised version that conforms to the latest etoys.pot (update2076) and can be compiled successfully. Please see files attached to http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/7976.
Mongolian team and Sayamindu, could you please review the file with them and upload it to Pootle?
Cheers, /Korakurider
I revised it *with zero knowledge about the language* (even the correct spelling of the language name :-) so I might introduce additional typos, sorry.

I have just finished translating E-Toys (around 27'000 words) into Mongolian. I spent most of my time in finding right words in Mongolian. I attached the translation with this email.

Great progress, everybody!
For getting it in Etoys and testing, we probably need to specify the fonts and probably add a few Smalltalk classes. Let us work together to get a working version in the near future release.

If we defaulted to Unicode input and Pango rendering for "unknown" languages, shouldn't a new language just work by adding a .mo?

Almost. For the font part, the Scratch experience tells us that the rendered text size widely varies from a font to another. They need to explicitly specify the scale factor for each languages. We don't have that mechanism so either have it or specify the font sizes for languages would be needed.
For the classes, the clipboard and "keyboard input interpreter" etc. should be aware of it (unfortunately).

But right now, one can add a language by adding a .mo file, and IMHO Pango should be enabled automatically if the translations require it. One could look at a random translation to find out which code points it probably uses. And for unknown languages we should use the Unicode input interpreter.

This is the case for Mongolian, for example. For Russian and Greek, it even asks if we want to install a font which is wrong since Pango uses the system fonts just fine.

While we want to get confirmation from MN team before we overwrite exisitng translations on Pootle, people registered at http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Pootle#Sign-up for MN aren't registered to wiki and we don't know how to contact them. (At least I tried on localization list but no response yet)
But existing MN translations on Pootle have been pushed to git (http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/etoys-notify/2008-August/000992.html) so it is safe for us to just upload trac version to Pootle and push to git. After that we could review difference among versions and revise translations if needed.
Because of well known problem of uploading huge etoys.po, only way to upload it would be that Pootle admin (Sayamindu) do it manually.
Sayamindu, how about this? If no problem, could you upload translations attached to http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/7976 and push to git ?

Here's what I had from the Mongolian team a few days back:
"Hey thanks for the heads up. I thought he just sent it to us, and had not submitted it. I am working on the revision right now. I'll check online about the translation. Sorry this guy didn't bother trying to do it right."
I'll prefer to wait a day or two before merging the file.
Cris, any updates ?
Thanks, Sayamindu
Dear E-Toys team,
Elana asked me to translate E-toys into Mongolian. Therefore, I formed the team of Mongolian professors and translated E-Toys. I worked very hard to translate it and get many advices from them. I sent the translation directly to E-Toys team as well as Mongolian team. Since the time was short, I tried to move on to next step. We have divided our work. Elana asked me to stay in the city to translate E-Toys while rest of the team went to countryside for teacher training.

It seems that Cris wrote this email to E-toys team. If there is any wrong word in my translation, please let me know. I would like to know what I did wrong. All the Mongolian professors who edited the translation agreed that the translation was done well. No one in claimed to translate E-Toys in Mongolian back then. However, I decided to translate and finished it. After I have done all the work, it is disappointing to hear that I did something wrong.
I sent the final edition to both Mongolian team and SJ. Some people get angry that I sent the translation direclty to SJ as well. In the meeting with the Minister of Education and the Mongolian core team, I was assigned to finish 80% of translation and the translation team (Cris and other people) to finish 20% of the all translation. I finished my 80% of translation (E-Toys). My translation was edited by Mongolian language professors and Computer Science professors. They are the famous professors in Mongolia. They said the translation is very well done.
I translated E-toys for Mongolian children and their education. Mongolian professors told me that they edited the translation, because it is for Mongolian children. I worked in days and nights to finish the translation. People worked with me on this know about it. I can assure you that this translation is done well, because the important professors and professionals worked on this. We are all working for Mongolian children. I think that you are also working for children around the world. OLPC get us all together and work as a team. As team, Cris should have told me about what was wrong. I am disappointed that he never told me anything about my translation, but criticizing me to other people.
I will come to the Ministry of Education tomorrow and tell about his email about me. I am doing all this work for Mongolian children. I am still working for OLPC in Mongolia right now.
Best regards, Enkhmunkh Zurgaanjin

H Enkhmunkh,
I don't think there were any complaints with the quality of the translations. From what I understand from the original mail, there were syntax errors and formatting problems (the tools that we use for integrating the translations with our software can be very picky when it comes to formatting). I have been very impressed with the progress of the Mongolian team over the past few months, and I'm sure your translations are linguistically flawless. We are trying to fix the formatting errors and clean it up, so that it gets integrated with the software as soon as possible, they have nothing to do with the quality of your translations :). Thank you for your wonderful effort.
Thanks again, Sayamindu
Sayamindu-
Thanks for your quick response to the email below.
Enky - just to reiterate what Sayamindu said, we are all extremely appreciative of your translation work, it was a great accomplishment (especially in the short time you did it) In fact some of the core team teachers nearly fainted when they saw it! - etoys has been tough for them to introduce without a local translation.
I hope that any misunderstandings have been cleared up and that we can get everyone's hard work out to the children of Mongolia!
Thanks again- el.
